No 802.11a 5GHz visible

My notebook has 11a-capable Wifi but scanning only shows 2.4GHz networks. I have tried two different cards (AR5B225 and Intel 7260).

Is there something I need to do to see and join 5GHz networks?

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

A couple things.  Using the iw tool, check the capabilities of you hardware(or at least the capability that Linux thinks you have)
Have you set up the regulatory domain for your system?
What tools are you using?  Wifi-menu, iw scan, NetworkManager ?

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

I am unable to set any regulatory domain, but I get this:

[root@gorilla:~]$ iw reg get
country 00: DFS-UNSET
        (2402 - 2472 @ 40), (6, 20), (N/A)
        (2457 - 2482 @ 40), (6, 20), (N/A), PASSIVE-SCAN
        (2474 - 2494 @ 20), (6, 20), (N/A), NO-OFDM, PASSIVE-SCAN
        (5170 - 5250 @ 160), (6, 20), (N/A), PASSIVE-SCAN
        (5250 - 5330 @ 160), (6, 20), (0 ms), DFS, PASSIVE-SCAN
        (5490 - 5730 @ 160), (6, 20), (0 ms), DFS, PASSIVE-SCAN

I am using ConnMan quite well otherwise. All 2.4GHz networks are found and associated with.

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

Just making sure you saw this

Have you installed crda and wireless-regdb ?  With country == 00, you may not get 5 GHz operation.  Where (approximately) in the world are you?

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

Setting country to Israel gets me this:

[root@gorilla:~]$ iw reg get
country IL: DFS-ETSI
        (2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20), (N/A)
        (5150 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (N/A), NO-OUTDOOR
        (5250 - 5350 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (0 ms), NO-OUTDOOR, DFS

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

Any luck connecting now?  Do you know the frequency of the router to which you are connecting?
And, what tool where you using? (I think you missed that question)

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

Currently channel 64.

I assume this is not normal behavior?

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

Channel 64 is 5320MHz,  That seems to be enabled for your card and country.
And, what tool are you using?

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

I am using ConnMan. At the low level, iw. But neither iw nor wireless_tools sees the 11a networks.

Re: No 802.11a 5GHz visible

Okay, I am now in front of my machine with a wireless card  -- sadly, my night is coming to a close.  I think your day is just starting smile.  Take a look at the following commands.  What does your machine report?   Also, I am a bit puzzled as to why you had to install the packages I pointed out in post #4;  This machine is a fresh install (about two weeks old); it had all of the requisite packages installed and I did not explicitly install them.  Any idea why they were not on your machine?
