Re: how to speed up boot

I don't understand.  You hit the graphical target at 16 seconds.  That is a lot shorter than a minute.   Wicd took roughly a third of that time.

Re: how to speed up boot

Previously it took 35 inches, and now it takes 1 foot?

I'm confused.

Lemme help you: http://www.rapidtables.com/convert/numb … egrees.htm

Degrees (º), minutes ('), seconds ('') to decimal degrees angle converter and how to convert.

35" is

º ' 35"
= º + '/60 + 35"/3600
= NaNº

...

<sigh>

@OP
Reboot and use a wall clock to measure the boot time.

Re: how to speed up boot

Sorry, in italy (") means sec. and (') means minutes.....
With my watch the boot process takes 58 sec from the selection of the OS to use to the xfce desktop...
Should I upload a bootchart image?

Re: how to speed up boot

How do you login? how do you start xfce?
From your output above it takes 16 seconds to reach graphical target. I guess starting xfce takes long in your case. Check programs that are autostarting with xfce if there is some huge one or maybe a script going crazy.

I put at button on it. Yes. I wish to press it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I do.  (Gune | Titan A.E.)

Re: how to speed up boot

i do autologin, and xfce starts automatically.
at boot these are the programs:
dropbox
policykit
xfsettingsd
wicd
xfce4-power-manager
pulseaudio

how can i find if there is a script that is going crazy?

Re: how to speed up boot

I have some trouble with xfc4-power-manager. It takes like 20sec (just an assumption, never measurred it) to start and this delays the whole start of xfce4. But I don't have time to investigate it at the moment, so I just leave it...

steoguitar wrote:

Try starting a WM (like openbox) without XFCE.
Try disabling single autostarts in XFCE (like the power-manager).

I think there is also a splash screen in XFCE which shows the currently started application (during the autostart process). Look at the splash screens under "Session and Startup".

How is your initramfs compressed? A lot of people like to user xz, and the problem is it takes longer to decompress. Try not compressing it at all in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf: COMPRESSION=cat

Re: how to speed up boot

Try systemd-analyze plot
Makes problems more visible imo.

Set it to 50M as said in Wiki and delete everything inside in /var/log/journal/ (not the directory itself). Reboot and note difference.

Also print out of dmesg, see if it reveals anything.

i applied your suggest but it takes 1sec less than as usual...
probably the big deal is when it runs xfce desktop

Re: how to speed up boot

Find the service file and add

 /usr/bin/sleep 50

to the exec line before the actual command.
Not very elegant (and not tested) but should work

Re: how to speed up boot

I'm checking the journal to see if any errors occourred...
It shows to me various "dhcpcd not running" red lines... now I added dhcpcd on boot..
this is last output of journalctl

do I need to remove some rows in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf?
and if so which rows?

Are you using Network Manager?  If so, try disabling dhcpcd.service.  I was experiencing boot time of 1min+ (thankfully not that long until login), and discovered that I had dhcpcd enabled needlessly and it was causing problems, I suppose conflicts with Network Manager.

Also had issues with the updated wpa_supplicant package, but they recently rolled it back in the repository, so a pacman -S wpa_supplicant should fix that.

Re: how to speed up boot

No, I'm using wicd...
in the wiki page of wicd they suggest to enable dhcpcd if the error appear
