Since it's NUMA related (I think) would it worth pointing out BIOS settings related? (Not sure if it helps but my motherboard is ASUS Formula V).

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

Since five of you have confirmed no panics using  4.0.1-4-ck, and since 4.0.1-4-ck uses ck1 unmodified (again, the only modification is keeping the ARCH default settings for NUMA), I am thinking that this setup is the way to go when 4.0.2 is released any day now.  Can I ask that people continue to run with 4.0.1-4-ck for the sake of verifying stability with it while we wait?  I think I that when I build 4.0.2, I will also leave NUMA as the Arch default and ask you folks to test it as well while we wait for a reply from CK.  Thanks all.

I figured out the graphics/nvidia issue I was having with 4.0.1-4-ck. Currently running/testing 4.0.1-4-ck as requested.

4.0.1-5-ck is still going strong here after that panic on first shutdown, but I'll roll back to -4 in preparation for 4.0.2. Cheers for all your work on this, graysky.

Over the last week or so, I've needed my ck kernel machine to work, and deliberately held off any updates. So I haven't been able to test 4.x. But I've been following this thread and have to add my voice to the thanks, not just to graysky, but all of you who have tested it. With any luck, when I do update, it'll all Just Work. smile

The server is synking, right?
'cause there are only linux-ck-${arch}-headers and virtualbox but not linux-ck-${arch} for i686 in the repo from the website and from pacman.

Well, I suppose that this is somekind of signature, no?

No problem, I already switched to 4.0.1-4-ck and It's running fine. Thank you for your hard work.

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

I've got into an issue on 4.0.1-4-ck (binaries). I've been using it since suggested to make sure it's stable. My system is btrfs and while using BFQ elevator I tried to run a scrub. This produced a kernel panic. I'm mentioned it here as I noticed the kernel panic was saying "elevator.c" which means it had to do something with BFQ if I'm not mistaken. I tried to reproduce it and catch a picture of it but wasn't able and only got kernel panics later but didn't see something relevant to elevator [1].

Can someone confirm that they are able to run normal btrfs operations with BFQ elevator on 4.0.1-4 ?

PS: btrfs scrub works fine with ARCH default kernel - no BFQ.

Here's a fix for that build failure: bfs462-rtmn-fix.patch
There's also this missing change from the original release: bfs462-update_inittask.patch
Will be interesting to see if this is somehow related to the crashes too, though I still haven't figured out why people are getting them.

OK gang, same drill as before.  For those of you who have experienced panics with 4.0.1-1-ck, please try these two:

1st is 4.0.2-1-ck which has NUMA disabled just as linux-ck has been configured by default for a number of years now.  Of course, this also has ck1 + the two new patches.  If that causes a panic, please report back here and then... try 4.0.2-2-ck which is identical to 4.0.2-1-ck EXCEPT that NUMA is enabled just like the ARCH kernel.  That is the only difference between the two.  Again, don't try 4.0.2-2-ck unless you experience a kernel panic under 4.0.2-1-ck.

TO DOWNLOAD 4.0.2-1-ck:
Option 1 (roll your own):

http://repo-ck.com/PKG_source/next/testing/linux-ck-4.0.2-1.src.tar.gz

Option 2 (my builds):

pacman -U http://repo-ck.com/PKG_source/next/testing/linux-ck-4.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
pacman -U http://repo-ck.com/PKG_source/next/testing/linux-ck-headers-4.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

REMEMBER, DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU RECEIVE A PANIC UNDER 4.0.2-1-ck
TO DOWNLOAD 4.0.2-2-ck:
Option 1 (roll your own):

http://repo-ck.com/PKG_source/next/testing/linux-ck-4.0.2-2.src.tar.gz

Option 2 (my builds):

For me 4.0.2-1-ck does not work: tested with CFQ and BFQ ang in both cases kernel panics occurred, both when the system was running and on shutdown. I'm going to test  4.0.2-2-ck now.

-- edit:  4.0.2-2-ck seems to work well.

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

First boot with 4.0.2-1-ck BFQ enabled, No panic
Second boot - Panic -  Hard power off
All subsequent boots with BFQ enabled:  no problems so far. Going to leave 4.0.2-1-ck installed and will report any further issues.

edit-1) A few more successful boot attempts but for the attempt previous to this. I have my system set to automatic login and start X at login, and following the Xorg message last time X did not start and I was left with just a blank screen and unable to change TTY or anything. I hard powered off and the next boot (this current session) no issues.

Going to try 4.0.2-2-ck and will report back.

edit-2) Looks like 4.0.2-2-ck is working, BFQ enabled and no issues so far.

Exactly the same experience as with 4.0.1-5, i.e. all successful boot and poweroff except for the panic on the first poweroff, with BFQ enabled.

graysky wrote:

All (three, so far) boot and poweroff successful, again with BFQ. So this one seems to have fixed it for me.

Also, inglur, how risky is trying a scrub as you ask? I (understandably) don't want to risk corrupting my stuff. Bearing in mind I've moved from 4.0.1-4 to 4.0.2-2 now.

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

@Miblo: From the point I had the issue with the btrfs scrub I tested ARCH default kernel and proceed with scrubbing my partitions. No errors after so that so I assume all good. From a point of btrfs maintenance scrub on partitions is generally safe and recommended. Consequently I asked on btrfs mailing list if they would be interested in more information about that but since it's probably a BFQ (or linux with ck patchset) issue they redirected me to BFQ forum. I intend to follow this up if I get more oops after testing 4.0.2-{1,2}. Searching around I found some issues with intensive i/o operations (like btrfs scrub) produced kernel panic with BFQ somewhere in 3.12 kernel I think so could be regression issue.

@graysky: I will test those as you requested this evening.

Thank you for the feedback, all.  I summarized your results on ck's blog; mean while, please keep testing 4.0.2-2-ck for stability.  I am running it on my home machine as well as my workstation in the office and haven't experienced any ill effects hmm

Alright, scrubs completed successfully with 0 errors and no panic (4.0.2-2 and BFQ).

And this is still going strong here, graysky. I haven't done anything fancy, but have experienced no ill effects whatsoever.

Just tested 4.0.2-1 (binary) and reached until GDM with BFQ enabled. Then kernel panic - hard reset.

4.0.2-2 (binary) boot no issues with BFQ tested a scrub and no issues. I'll keep it for now - see how it goes.

Out of curiosity: Why by default ARCH enables NUMA? Correct me if wrong but since ck-patchset is targeting desktop pc I don't think NUMA would benefit any of the new CPUs?

Edit: I think I found my answer: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/31187

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

@graysky: What's the difference of the generic x86_64 package from your repo-ck to the specific architecture (ie piledriver) ? How would one replicate those when building from PKGBUILD? Below are the flags I use with makepkg (ccache) enabled. After installed and using 4.0.2-2 binary from your link above I compiled my own as well. I noticed when trying to install 15MB difference on the installation size - so I'm curious, is that only from the architecture specific commands? (I would expect the install size to be smaller to be honest as the architecture specific commands offer complicated commands compared to the generic x86_64)

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

@inglor - The kernel has hard-coded MAKEFLAGS so /etc/makepkg.conf shouldn't matter.  You will need to set up the specific Arch in the nconfig step, but that should not affect the size of the package.  Disable ccache and see if that makes a difference.  Are you making any other chances in the nconfig?

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

Hi guys, I just found something curious: today I decided to try to do a bit of debugging on linux 4.0.2-1-ck so I downloaded the source package and followed the wiki for Kdump. Everything went smoothly and I was able to obtain a working kernel with debugging symbols but strangely I was not able to reproduce the issue with that kernel. After a bit of thinking I realized that, apart the debugging symbols, the only difference was in the kernel parameters because I added the parameter maxcpus=1. So I re-installed the binary package for 4.0.2-1-ck built by graysky and I found that it has the same behaviour: If I boot it with the default parameters (I use grub as bootloader)

linux	/vmlinuz-linux-ck root=UUID=fcc0bad1-85c6-40ed-a86c-05469fde4917 rw quiet nmi_watchdog=0

i get a kernel panic as usual. If I use use the option maxcpus=1

linux	/vmlinuz-linux-ck root=UUID=fcc0bad1-85c6-40ed-a86c-05469fde4917 rw quiet nmi_watchdog=0 maxcpus=1

then the kernel doesn't panic, but Instead  the following error message appears some time in the journal (which did not appear with the stock kernel).

Moreover, intrigued by this behaviour, I start to sequentially reboot both arch stock kernel and linux 4.0.2-1-ck and compared the results:

    arch stock kernel : total_reoots = 32; panics = 0; errors = 0;
     linux 4.0.2-1-ck : total_reoots = 32; panics = 5; errors = 0;
4.0.2-1-ck & maxcpu=1 : total_reoots = 32; panics = 0; errors = 5;

Bwt, can someone confirm that booting linux 4.0.2-1-ck with the parameter maxcpus=1 does not generate a kernel panic?

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

I don't know about the maxcpus options, but it seems that the iwlwifi is causing the problems, no?  What if you boot into unmodified 4.0.2-1-ck and blacklist the iwlwifi module?

Re: unofficial linux-ck repo with cpu optimized packages is ONLINE

I blacklisted iwlwifi and rebooted into into unmodified 4.0.2-1-ck but a kernel panic occurred anyway.  Always with iwlwifi blacklisted, I rebooted into unmodified 4.0.2-1-ck  with maxcpus option set and no kernel panic happened (and obviously there is no error in the journal).

PS: it seems that maxcpus=1 forces the kernel to use only one core and to disable the others.
