[SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

After updating the other day, my username disapeared from  both the  gnome log on screen and the users settings page. I've tried creating a new user, and it does indeed appear. However my administrator account does not appear.

Hi, thank you for your response.

yes i can login through a tty, i can login through gdm too if i click the *not listed?* letters and manually type in my username.

my account is missing from the Users settings and the login screen:
http://d.pr/i/NGp0

if i create a user, however, it'll show up on the login screen and on the Users settings.

im just afraid this might lead to some random behavior in the future.

what i have tried so far:

user id was 501, users with an id < than 1000 will not show up on login screen. I changed the user id:

uid=1000(silverone) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),7(lp),10(wheel),91(video),92(audio),93(optical),95(storage),96(scanner),98(power),1000(lpadmin

checked /etc/login.defs

# Min/max values for automatic uid selection in useradd
#
UID_MIN			 1000
UID_MAX			60000
# System accounts
SYS_UID_MIN		  500
SYS_UID_MAX		  999

edited /etc/gdm/custom.conf and appended IncludeAll=true below [greeter]

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

Is the ownership etc. on your hone directory still correct? How exactly did you change the uid?

You shouldn't be in all those groups by the way - see the systemd page for info on which groups are now unneeded and may cause problems.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

Hi again,

per your instructions i removed the unnecessary groups, thanks.

[silverone@silver-arch ~]$ id
uid=1000(silverone) gid=1000(silverone) groups=1000(silverone),10(wheel)
[silverone@silver-arch ~]$ cd ..
[silverone@silver-arch home]$ ls -l
total 8
drwx------  16 admin     admin     4096 Oct 17 04:02 admin
drwx------+ 51 silverone silverone 4096 Oct 17 04:02 silverone

i changed the userid by  opening a tty under root and using: usermod -u 1000 silverone

----

at this point, i'm considering removing the user "silverone" without deleting the home folder, then using admin to create a new user "silverone" through gnome settings.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

You didn't need to remove yourself from the users group, but still. What does

getfacl /home/silverone

give you? That + means there's more information there.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

Hi,
I have the same issue. Right now I don't want to create a new user, so I did "getfacl /home/user", this is the result:

[diego@DiegosPC ~]$ getfacl /home/diego
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: home/diego
# owner: diego
# group: users
user::rwx
group::---
other::---

Thank you in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

I unfortunately gave up on this issue, and just recreated my user without deleting the home folder. And it did work. Unfortunately it gave me a uid of 1002 instead of 1000 and i suspect gnome couldnt read/write to the home folder and failed to log in every time. Having failed to notice this, i just deleted the home folder.

i believe that if one were to repeat what i did, but make sure the UID is the same, would have his problem fixed. However, you might want to wait for further input.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

@dfpalacioh,
I assume you don't get the + when you do this listing, then? That looks entirely standard to me - i.e. nothing in the ACL over and above standard ownership and permissions.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

Same problem as OP. This happened after the recent gnome 3.10.1 update that came in. Things were fine with 3.10.
I dual boot with OSX on a Macbook Pro. Thus, I created my user with a UID 501.

Little more info:

[abhishek@Gauranga ~]$ id
uid=501(abhishek) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),10(wheel)
ls -la /home/
total 16
drwxr-xr-x  4 root     root  4096 Nov 30  2012 .
drwxr-xr-x 19 root     root  4096 Jun  4 07:59 ..
drwx------ 20 abhishek users 4096 Oct 18 14:43 abhishek
drwx------  5 root     root  4096 Nov 30  2012 kubuntu
[abhishek@Gauranga ~]$ getfacl /home/abhishek/
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: home/abhishek/
# owner: abhishek
# group: users
user::rwx
group::---
other::---

EDIT: Oh, and I removed my user from the groups video,audio,optical,games,power,lp,storage,scanner as suggested in a previous post. I am on a Sandy Bridge machine with HD3000 intel graphics.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

I think that I found a workaround, similar to the silverone's solution, only with an additional step.

First, I deleted my old user without delete the home folder:

userdel user

Second, I created a new user in the Gnome settings with the same name. I tried to log in but it failed. I searched and found that the problem is in the original home folder: when I deleted my old user, the owner of the home folder changed. The solution was to change the owner of the folder and the files with "chown". Right now I can log in, apparently, without any problem.

Thanks for your help.

Well, as you have already created a new user (though with the same name), I guess I'm the only one left who doesn't want to do it smile.

Well...I thought that I had to do it all over again (with Evolution, Empathy, Steam, LibreOffice, symbolic links, passwords, etc.); but I didn't have enough patience. "Someone" said: "How poor are they that have not patience!..." tongue.

Re: [SOLVED] Gnome user disappeared

This happened to me as well.  I had a UID of 500 but changing it to 1000 did not fix it.  Eventually I traced it to the accountsservice files in /var/lib/AccountsService/users.  My account had been marked as a system account:

SystemAccount=true

Once I fixed that then everything went back to normal.

To clarify it should read:

SystemAccount=false

EDIT:
Oh!, and it still does not work for me. The entry keeps reverting back to true after reboots and log out. May be it's because I haven't changed my UID and kept it as 501. I don't want to change it as then I won't be able to access my data files kept on my OSX disk.

May be it's better to remove the SOLVED tag for now untill we get a foolproof solution.

Here is the similar bug in accountsservice for lightdm.

I'm going to switch to lightdm if they don't fix it in gdm soon..
