The current website is not mobile friendly, so it looks horrible on a small-screen device. I noticed that gentoo has a fresh website recently. Maybe arch can catch up soon.

I don't want to find out how the gentoo site looks in elinks or without javascript... having a mobile site would be nice though.

I know you don't want to know but I can't help myself. It looks/works fine in elinks, Firefox sans javascript works fine too, just navigate via the footer links as opposed to the header links for forum/wiki/etc.

its not to bad just takes an extra step of zoom or even turn the long way. I've seen worse with sites that like to use small text and for some reason default to very high resolutions for some reason the effect is zooming in to be readable you have to scroll vertically its very anoying.

I'd rather the ArchLinux website didn't embed random third-party scripts and trackers.

A complete remake wouldn't be necessary either. Use Foundation to add mobile friendly layouts and voila.

Actually, I like the current Arch website and I like particularly the fact that it looks the same whether you are using a mobile browser or not
-- edit: @kvtb#11 : oh, you're right, i hadn't noticed that.

the Gentoo website seems to be using a 'responsive design', so there is no mobile version, the site adjusts itself to the size of the browser window (which happens to be smaller at a mobile device). Resize your browser in horizontal direction to see it in action

Pulling up the forums on my phone looks ok... There is an archwiki app from the google play store, too. I keep it on my phone for those times I feel adventurous, screw up a few things and make my desktop unbootable.

I like how it is right now already, and it does actually work fine on most devices i'd bet

. Server: Intel Core i5 2500k @ 3.9 Ghz, 8 GB DDR2-XMP RAM @ 1600 Mhz, Geforce GTX 570 (Gainward Phantom) - Arch Linux 64-Bit

I'm going to clone the site repo and maybe have a go at making it a bit more mobile friendly. (probably just stack the sidebar under the content for mobile)
Honestly it doesn't look that bad on mobile, its just that the fonts could be larger and more readable and items stacked so its easier to read. I don't think a major site redesign is necessary.

Sounds nice idea. I love the simplicity in this forum's design, but I have to zoom all time in my mobile just to read or answer. Using Pale Moon Mobile.

People are always on about "mobile-first" these days, and my response is this: Get back to work or pay attention to your instructor. If you're away from your computer you don't need to be on a tech support site, you're quite probably in a situation where you shouldn't be browsing the web, and the help you can offer others without being able to test your own suggestions is probably limited to (or can be found with) keyword searches the OP should be doing anyway.
People who need a good mobile tech support site are the ones who've borked their systems and don't have any other way of getting help. That's it. Besides, if having to move your fingers a bit to zoom in is your main concern, well, you're just gonna have to move your fingers at least as much to scroll a greater distance through larger text anyway. Changing the site code won't change the limitations of the medium.
Of course if you're just looking for a simple aesthetic refresh, go for it. Everyone likes to change their surroundings a little bit now and then.

I'm sick of sites being "dumbed down" for mobile phone use.
Sometimes, maybe most times, one size does not fit all ...

I've tried to view the archlinux website on a ipad seems fine to me and that's mobile - in my view if it ain't broken don't fix it..... I prefer the archlinux website as it is, it's simple and clean plus it loads fast on my machine whereas other Linux sites don't because of it's fuzzy design especially with them using adobe flash.

I'd add my vote for a display size responsive site. The simplicity of the current site is fine, but it is a pita to view the forums on my mobile (which is an LG G3, so a fairly large screen). Zooming in to make the fonts legible without screen wrapping, and then trying to work through the posts is not fun.

...but seriously, those are good points you present. Also, has anyone brought up the idea that maybe, instead of a better website, we need a better mobile web browser?

I played with the css theme a bit and got some acceptable results for a few sample pages in Chromium. I did not try to modify forum, wiki and AUR.

I know, but I wonder if I will ever get it into a clean format that integrates cleanly with the rest of the templates.
