After upgrading the google-chrome package from the AUR from 40.0.2214.115-1 to 41.0.2272.76-1, I cannot select text either in the address bar or on a page. I'm running Arch inside VirtualBox.
Downgrading does solve the problem, but seems an unsustainable solution. I tried searching the Google Chrome bug tracker to see if this is a known problem, but came up with nothing. Is anyone else experiencing problems with this post-upgrade?

No problems here. What else was upgraded right before this problem occurred? Have you tried chromium?

Nothing, I only upgraded google-chrome from AUR, not anything else.
I will try Chromium now.

Update: chromium-41.0.2272.76-1-x86_64 exhibits the same problem for me. Text is not selectable there either.

Chromium works fine here. Sounds like a graphics card issue (but I have no idea how VB handles X).

Jason -- I don't think it's a graphics card issue, it's not that no selection appears, but really nothing is selected. Going on to Google Maps and dragging the map also yields weird effects, and no other applications are affected.

Try a different WM, maybe?

I'm experiencing this with chromium in an Arch VM within VirtualBox as well. I've reproduced the issue in both i3 and GNOME, with and without vbox's hardware acceleration enabled. I have also reproduced it with Ubuntu in VirtualBox using Chrome (Ubuntu's chromium is still 40). It looks like this is an interaction between VirtualBox and chrom[e|ium] 41? Perhaps this should be filed as a new bug in the chromium bug reporter?
Edit: More specifically, this seems to be that chrom[e|ium] isn't responding to mouse move events. I am unable to drag the scroll bar or select text with click-drag, and when I hover over links or entries in chromium's drop-downs the expected hover action doesn't occur.

Thanks a lot for posting! It's good to see I'm not going crazy :-)
It seems this bug is related to https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issu … ?id=458291 and https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issu … ?id=456222
I can confirm Machine > Disable Mouse Integration fixes it for me, as was suggested on the tracker. This is less than ideal, though, since it makes it quite difficult to bring up the Mac menu bar any more from inside the guest.

Thanks for linking the bugs! I'll star those and hopefully the bug will be addressed soon.

Are you running the latest Guest Additions? That often solves clipboard problems for me.

I am (community/virtualbox-guest-dkms 4.3.24-1, to be specific), unfortunately the issue persists.

Same problem, Ubuntu 14.04

I had the exact same problem with a fresh install on virtualbox.
I installed the xorg-drivers group, rebooted and all was solved.
I'm pretty sure I didn't need all of them, but hey, it worked.

VMware Workstation 11 here, same issue.
I had the same problem as well with Chrome only. It worked with the Web browser that comes with Arch (I can select text, right-click, etc). But within Chrome I could not "drag" a tab out to make another browser window. I couldn't select text. I could select text within the URI text field. But yet, clicks were registered. It seemed like no "drag" or "click-n-hold" event was being registered. Rebooted, nada.
What resolved it for me was what @cipater mentioned: installed several of the xorg-drivers group (not all though!). Rebooted, all is fine now.
You can see the ones I installed below. NOTE: I am planning on booting natively into Arch with this install on my Helix (sync'ing disks). Hence why I have extras installed.
