Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi guys,

since yesterday Gnome freezes when I start Gnome applications (Evince, Empathy, Nautilus, etc.) from the shell or open files in Nautilus (e.g., on the desktop).  Sometimes the applications start after a longer while (i.e., more than 30 secs), sometimes I need to kill the session.

There are no problems when I do start a non-Gnome app such as Chrome or VLC.  It's also working when I start the Gnome apps with alt+f2 or directly from the terminal or via shortcuts.  Also there is no problem when starting Gnome applications in i3.  For me, everything looks a like a gnome-specific issue.

I read a lot of journalctl today but could not find any suspicious log that could guide my to a fix.

Do you have an idea what's wrong?  I am quite new to arch, so maybe I don't find an obvious solution on my own : )

Thanks

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi

I do not have a solution for you, but I do have the exact same problem.
Yesterday I updated to kernel: 4.0.2-1-ARCH. I also installed a AUR package (atom-editor).

This morning I experience the same problem you describe. I have uninstalled nodejs and npm, and the atom-editor package.
I have tried with a new profile, same problem.

I will do some more trouble shooting, will come back if I got a solution.

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi Micke,

thanks for your reply.  I am happy to hear that it doesn't affect only me : )

I will continue reading my logs, and will do the same in case I find a solution.

Thanks

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi

I have two machines:
* Dell XPS 13 (2013)
* NUC DN2820FYK

The setup is similar, I have updated both to the latest kernel and gnome-shell.
I have problem with the Dell XPS Machine, not with the NUC.

The XPS in newly installed from scratch, two days ago. They do differ in software, the NUC was newly installed two weeks ago.

I do not know if it is for any help, if I should post all installed application etc?

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

I am having the exact same issue with my Lenovo t440s.  It started after an update a couple days ago but I haven't been able to narrow down what is causing it. Everything seems to work fine in xfce.

Edit: I also have a newly installed system and tried resetting all gnome configurations back to default. It didn't make a difference.

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi

I have notice that it is possible to start gnome-applications from the terminal without any problems.
It also possible to install, plank, and then execute any kind of application with no problems.

But if I start them from gnome-favorites or the application searcher, 95% of the time, the applications will hang. Sometimes they start again.

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Same problem here.
Easiest way to reproduce it: rightclick gnome shell background and click "Settings". This hangs everytime for me.

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi Micke,

I experience the very same (see my initial post).  There seems to be a problem in Gnome interaction, for instance, it also freeze on my system when I open a PDF from Nautilus / Files.  For now, I am running i3 and everything's nice and beautiful there : )

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi,

Same problem here as described above.
Asus X555LD-XO549H (Intel® Core™ i3-4030U Dual Core, with NVIDIA® GeForce™ 820M and Intel® HD Graphics 4400 ).
Tried to update the intel-ucode, didn't make any difference. Tried with a new profile (created a new user), nothing.

On a side note, problems started after a gnome upgrade that started on the 2015-05-12 (https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?pag … ast_update).
Eventually gave up and started using plasma (Kf5).

But I'll keep an eye on this thread to check for solutions.

Regards,
- aurocha

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi

An update, I have tried to re-install the whole system, same problem.
Darn!

So I tried to back to the lts-kernel (kernel-lts). This seems to solve the problem. No more hanged-gnome-sessions.
I cant promise a solution, but it solved my problems. But I haven't have the time to see if any offer problems has arrived because the older kernel-version.

Then the problem arise I updated from kernel: 4.0.1-1-ARCH to: 4.0.2-1-ARCH. Maybe some hardware dependent-kernel-issue...

Thanks a lot for sharing.  It works for me as well.  Linux 4.0.3 has been released 3 days ago, let's hope it will fix this issue : )

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

I am having the same problem on the HP Envy dv6. I've installed Arch many times before and this time I am having a problem. It happens with GNOME and Cinnamon. The only thing that works is GNOME Flashback from the AUR so I am using that currently. So glad I am not the only one... Hopefully there is an update soon that will fix it!

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Same problem on my Lenovo Y510P with Linux 4.0.2 & gnome 3.16.2.
Downgrading (tried gnome-shell, gnome-desktop, gnome-* and also gtk3) does not work. I cannot even confirm which package causes this annoying problem.
I found that firefox froze but chromium did not.

Hi, have you tried to downgrade to the kernel-lts?
It solved my problem...

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Hi,

Tried Linux  Linux 4.0.3 from testing, the problem persists.
Cannot downgrade to linux-lts because of the focaltech touchpad, though there is a dkms module.

I'll keep trying.. for now, using another Desktop Environment sad

4.0.3 has the same problem on my machine (HP Elitebook 840 G1) as well.  However, it seems that the Wayland session works for me.

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

Same here. Both 4.0 as well as 4.0.3* (latest).

AMD FX-6300
Radeon 6850 (radeon driver)
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 5.0)
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/produc … id=4602#ov

It also manifested like this on my machine

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

FIX: I've had this problem as well. Noticing it only happened when something was loading, and thus correlated with the "spinning wheel" cursor animation, I tried changing the cursor theme in gnome-tweak-tool to something else (away from Adwaitha). That fixed it. I'm currently using whiteglass from xcursor-themes and the freezing has disappeared.

Yeah you're right. It fixed on my laptop. I'm now using oxygen.

Re: Gnome freezes when starting Gnome applications

A bad cursor causing system crashes? Nice. Is there a bug report for this already?
