Re: Failed update

Pikass -- I encountered this problem with archck kernel.

I opened this thread in "Packman and Upgrade issues" since
pacman -Syu broke the working system.

Re: Failed update

Ok, give this video line a shot, and report back what errors/output you get:

video=vesafb:ywrap,pmipal,1024x768-16@60
(I specify 1024x768 specifically. do not change to 1280x800 as afaik it is unsupported by vesafb-tng)

if that doesnt work, and you do manage to boot your system, could you please pastebin a dmesg output and link it here?

In the meantime, if you want, you can boot without any splash or video options, and you will get just a plain low res console.

Re: Failed update

Oops, I've got the same prob now.
I installed grub-gfx out of [wael]s repo. Too bad grub-gfx doesn't support reiserfs4 (my boot and / filesystem). Using the Arch installation CD and chrooting into my installation I managed to get it to work again. I didn't have a backup of my menu.lst, so I wrote a new one.
Everything works fine, except for the resolution of the vesafb.
I had it working before with this parameter:

video=vesafb;1024x768-60

and I tried a few others like

video=vesafb;1024x768-16@60

but I had no luck. Sorry but since I'm currently not working at my Arch Notebook I don't have a logfiles available.
I'm using the latest kernel26archck and mkinitramfs.
Any ideas?

Cheers Sigi

idea: give me some output! Theres various problems in this thread. Is the screen blank? Does the system boot at all? Are there any error messages? Are there any messages at all?

Without a problem defined... what's there to fix.

btw,

video=vesafb;1024x768-60

shouldnt ever work, that's 60bit color which it definitely doesnt support.

video=vesafb;1024x768-16@60

is valid, bu still different to the reccomended lines.

please use a line from the various documentation.

Heres a guess at your problem:

Re: Failed update

The system boots properly but the fb resolution is at 640x480 ("the console font is huge"). I know it sounds strange but "video=vesafb;1024x768-60" worked before and "video=vesafb;1024x768-16@60" didn't work.

I'm sorry I can't give you any logfile-output but I try to explain my problem to everyone as accurate as possible.

honestly, I'm not sure whats causing all these issues with various ATI cards, and its annoying me. It's difficult to debug, without an ATI or affected ATI card, and I know that quite possibly in some of these situations it could be an invalid or incorrect fbsplash line. Googling shows others with similar issues.

I have one possible solution, but I'm worried it might mess up 3D acceleration, it'd be great if you could contact me on IRC or MSN Sigi and we can give it a shot. If you read this post again, ill be on #archlinux for the next 3 or so hours.

Re: Failed update

thx iphitus! I'll try fix #2 of the rage3d-forum as soon as possible (in other words: in 11h, at least..) I really appreciate your help and I'll pay it back to you by testing your ati-fgrlx-drivers the next time you update them (or I'll pay for a round if we meet sometimes anywhere in australia.. ;-P)

You've got a semi-colon in your line, and the docs have a normal colon.  Possibly the problem?

Re: Failed update

well spotted Cerebral.

I uploaded a new archck package, this one has radeonfb enabled which ought to work better for some....

To use radeonfb, change:

video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1280x1024-32@60

to

video=radeonfb:ywrap,mtrr,1280x1024-32@60

or whatever your line and resolution happens to be.

Re: Failed update

Cerebral and iphitus: Thank you for your help. Maybe it really was the semicolon, I got it working now with

video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-16,vram:128

I'm quite sure it was just the semicolon...

Cheers Sigi
