can one stick with the same kernel? for how long?

I have to stick with 3.17 atm, since higher versions break my alsa.

question: what problems can I have in the future?

Figure out why recent kernel break your kernel or use pulseaudio. That is a deprecated kernel.

There's linux-lts 3.14.
