I'm using pulseaudio
first: HDMI is working perfectly with kernel 3.17
after upgrading to 3.19 sound stopped working saying the HDMI port is unplugged in pavucontrol. issue is somehow similar to: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=171244
after I downgraded to 3.17 again it worked again.
so I decided to stick with 3.17 until 4.0 comes to the repros.
now that I upgraded to 4.0 I found out that the problem remains.
fallowing does not solve the problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … turned_off

today after booting (I boot once a day in the morning) the sound worked, but it failed form time to time (for exemple, in a video from youtube, every 30 second or so the sound stopped for 1 or 2 seconds). outputs were the same (HDMI unplugged).
UNTIL: I leaved my desktop and the "auto shut down video" came in. after moving my mouse and the video came back sound is gone again.

so I had no choice and downgraded to 3.17 again, obviously I can't stay with 3.17 forever and still hope someone can point me to a solution.
what I found out now (in 3.17) is that in pavucontrol all analouge outputs are "unplugged" while EIC958 and HDMI are not. In 3.19 and 4.0 the analouge outputs are not "unplugged" but HDMI is

installed 4.0.1.1 to try it again.
same problem
next thing I tried than is to force pulse to use the HDMI device by adding this to /etc/pulse/default.pa
load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3
the result is that pulse can't find any soundcard
so I read "no cards" in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … g#No_cards
"pacmd list" lists the card and wiki doesn't offer solution than:

to my surprise, removing PulseAudio doesn't solve the problem.
title changed.
no alsa errors in journal.
I guess my only option is to file a bug report

tried linux 4.0.4 now. same problem
output of "ALSA Information Script" directly after boot (sound working with a lot of skips): http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=d031f … 774547470e

You should perform a git bisect using v3.17 as a good kernel and v3.18 as a bad kernel.
Since this issue has not been fixed with v4.0, there is a good chance the developers are not aware of your problems.
Small recommendation: Check if v3.18-rc1 works before starting the bisect. If v3.18-rc1 fails, then you are in for quite some work. If it happens after v3.18-rc1 (v3.18-rc1 works) then the bisect should be relatively easy.

thanks, finally a starting point
I didn't even check 3.18, since Arch skipped it....will try some 3.18 kernels from AUR, and than have a look at git bisect

That was not my intention, but testing v3.18 would make more sense. Looks like I misread your initial post.
I suggest you use this kernel version to build your own custom kernel with 'make menuconfig' in your ~ and point grub to it.
Then bisecting will be just using git for this.
If v3.18 works, then v3.19 is the bad kernel and v3.18 is the good kernel in git. Suggest to test v3.19-rc1.
If v3.18 does not work, then v3.18 is the bad kernel and v3.17 is the good kernel in git. Suggest to test v3.18-rc1.
Hint: Use 'make localmodconfig' to create a tailored kernel for your hardware/distribution/needs. Make sure you plug in some usb devices / wifi cards etc you want to use.

I guess this is my bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1457369
so i'll wait the outcome in this bugreport

Are you sure? They mention that a lower version of v3.19 works for them:
3.19.0-15 kernel: Life is good
3.19.0-18 kernel: No HDMI audio available

well, I never had 3.19.0 installed
I think it was 3.19.3
anyways, it seams that in this bugreport all snd_hda_intel chips have this problem, while all other chips don't seam to have the problem. actualy HDMI sound is working on my laptop with the latest kernel, which is not snd_hda_intel
