I had kwallet auto unlocking when I logged in with KDE 4. No annoying prompts for passwords etc. Thanks to the wiki and the pam module https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE_Wallet. This appears to not work in Plasma 5 anymore.
Does anyone know how to get that functionality back? I've tried going through the wiki and some forum posts but haven't found a solution.

You can't, pam_kwallet is not yet ported to kf5 according to this thread on KDE forums.
I managed to get it working for KDE4 apps, but it still displays a pass prompt for any kf5 app.

Damn, thanks for the heads up Soukyuu.

You can use a GPG key instead of a password for opening Kwallet. Am not sure if that works for you, though.

Thanks Xabre, I'm aware of the GPG option. Not sure it would solve my problem but to try it out, do you know how I set it up? I don't see anything in the options now that my kwallet has already been established. Is it a matter of deleting and remaking the wallet?

When creating a new wallet, it will ask you to use either GPG or Blowfish for authentication. GPG is actually default, at least that's how it appears here.
Blowfish will require password, while GPG requires a valid GPG key, and you don't have to set up a passoword for GPG key when you create one. That basically avoids double password authentication on session startup.
I'm sure it isn't as safe as having a key with good password, but somehow I feel that if anyone managed to gain access to that key, I have a lot bigger issues than absence of that password.
Oh, and as for converting existing wallet, here's what I did: open kwalletmanager, export current wallet into an xml file, create a new wallet with GPG authentication, set it as the default one, then import that xml file.

Xabre, thanks that appears to be working. Oddly I had to kill the entire owncloud client config and remake it for it to pick up the new wallet but eventually it works. Thanks man
