i have installed the plymouth package
put the plymouth hook into /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
regenerated the initramfs
installed the packages plymouth-theme-arch-logo and plymouth-theme-paw-arch from the AUR with yaourt
and enabled the lightdm plymouth service

Plymouth primarily uses KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) to display graphics. If you can't use KMS (e.g. because you are using a proprietary driver) you will need to use framebuffer instead...

If you have neither KMS nor a framebuffer, Plymouth will fall back to text-mode.
I'm guessing Head_on_a_Stick is also going in the direction of framebuffer,
but take a look at Uvesafb if you haven't already set up a framebuffer.
