Asked for username only, no password

Hello guys,

I am unable to login into console after I boot Archlinux. Not sure what happened or what could go wrong after latest update of the system, but now I cant login, because I can enter only login, but no password. I have no chance to properly login with both credentials. Sorry for such brief description of the situation. Where should I start to look? I have a liveCD and I am able to mount partitions and stuff, but what should I check in that case?

Thanks for any advice!

What happens after you enter the login username?

I would use the liveCD and chroot into your system.  Read the journal for clues.

I simply input the username and then it skips asking for password and says Login incorrect (logically as I entered no password).

It looks like there is no journal for normal boots, only for "chroot boots"? Is it possible?

Re: Asked for username only, no password

Use the live ISO to (arch-)chroot into your system and post the content of /etc/group and the output of:

ls /
ls /home

No, same situation. It allows me input only username, then skips asking for pass. I should say this started to happen after interrupted system update.

That isn't the sort of information you save until post #8...

Chroot in and finish/fix the update.

I cant.... or acutally I couldnt, because it was yelling stuff, like this:

error: mesa: signature from XXX is unknown trust
:: File XYZ.xz is corrupted (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature).
Do you want to delete it? [Y/n]?

I that mess started when system update froze because of my overclocked rig. I had to clear CMOS of bios, so it also restored default time in bios and that snowball of complications started to grow.

I did however something which was not quite good. I (force-)reinstalled all until-now-installed packages with expectation it will help.... but no. I really would like to know what went wrong, what broke console log in. How it is possible it stopped asking for passwords which makes login impossible....

UPDATE: it seems I found a way to extract some info...

May 29 23:04:40 HAL9001 login[388]: PAM unable to dlopen(/usr/lib/security/pam_unix.so): /usr/lib/libtirpc.so.1: file too short
May 29 23:04:40 HAL9001 login[388]: PAM adding faulty module: /usr/lib/security/pam_unix.so
May 29 23:04:40 HAL9001 login[388]: PAM unable to dlopen(/usr/lib/security/pam_access.so): /usr/lib/libtirpc.so.1: file too short
May 29 23:04:40 HAL9001 login[388]: PAM adding faulty module: /usr/lib/security/pam_access.so

so how to fix that? :)

UPDATE2: reinstalled libtirpc & Pam package. I'm in...

But still have to fix messages about corrupted packages when updating system.
