gnome apps working only via terminal

I recently installed arch linux (dual boot with windows 7) with gnome as my desktop environment.
I am able to open the apps only via xterm. Other than that, whenever I try to open an application by clicking on the icon.it freexes(the mouse pointer keeps rotating forever) and I have no other option than to hard reset or logout.

I assume there must be a bug in some configuration file.Please help.

I have no idea what coud be causing this, but you can always try to delete all config files and configure Gnome from scratch.
