would like some tips on networking

i just obtained a second computer. two people will use the computers at the same time, so what i would like to do is to connect both computers to the internet.

i have one adsl connection (pppoe). since i dont have a router (and i dont want to buy one yet), i want to make one pc a router for the other pc, but the router pc should still be useable normally (as a workstation with kde). (i guess the router pc should have two lan ports.)

I dont need to be spoonfed, i would just like to ask if anyone could give me some pointers on where to start with this? or at least any advice on the "best" way to do this?

Two very simple howtos:
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Masquerading-Simple-HOWTO/
http://netfilter.org/documentation/HOWTO/NAT-HOWTO.html
I started to learn iptables from these. Oh no, man iptables was first. :-)

And you will need two network cards in the host machine.

Howver, check your modem, all you may need is a switch.

Waltm has a good point.
Many adsl modems have a NAT router built-in.
If your pc now uses DHCP, then there's a good chance all you need is a switch.

Booting with apg Openrc, NOT systemd.
Automounting : not needed, i prefer pmount
Aur helpers : makepkg + my own local repo === rarely need them

Re: would like some tips on networking

A switch is hardware.  It has a in lan port that goes to the modem and four lan ports that I plug two pcs  into.

In my setup, the modem itself does PPPOE and provides a DHCP server for the internal network.

You probably need to in enter your modem's setup page to enable the other ports.

check the web pages of your ISP, the modem's maker and have a ready supply of comstumables (coffee, tea, etc) handy.

good luck
