There's an issue with Intel Modem drivers that's holding up the 2.6.16 kernel release, as explained by tpowa here. If you're using either of these drivers, please post here, to give him an idea of the numbers involved.

I have such a modem, but I don't use it often.. I wouldn't mind if it wouldn't be supported anymore

Is this really the case? If so, wtf happened to "freedom 0?" Or is freedom 0 just something RMS bangs on about, and not really part of the GPL at all? I can't remember...

Does anyone have linkage to dev discussion about this?

I have an i915 chipset in my thinkpad so I believe I would be affected. That being said, I'm already using 2.6.16 from testing and couldn't care less about dial-up support.

Yeah, I'm on the mailing list. I'm just concerned about the whole "NO NON-GPL!!!!!!!" thing. I don't use a hell of a lot of non-free, but the idea of simply refusing to allow them is badbadbad imo. But then, I'm not RMS.

It's a concern, sure. For the moment, though, we need an idea of how many users this will affect - that's what this thread is for.

Two in twelve hours, and neither particularly concerned. That's encouraging.

I have one that I haven't been able to get going yet. From time to time I wander into dial-up land, so it would be wonderful to be able to use the modem. Whatever, though.

It depends what kind of modem you have. I have a i915 chipset too. The modem on my system use the slmodem package so it's not affected by this. BTW, I don't use the modem.

Mine is i915, and the modem is Motorola SM56... and I don't use it, either.

I know about one guy on IRC who really struggled to get this driver working with his modem. He succeeded eventually, a few days ago. So you can count one user who really needs the driver (I will point him to this thread when I see him again).

Well, GPL is by design incompatible to anything else.
I won't post an opinion now, since I don't have that modem anyway.

A possible legal way, if Andrew Morton won't relicense the functions, or when intel doesn't want to license their drivers to GPL, is to provide a dummy driver that is licensed as LGPL. The driver provides a symbol, which is just a passthrough function to the GPL'ed symbol. The intel driver can utilize this new symbol then, because we export it as a normal symbol.

This solution is legally perfect, but it's a plain stupid solution. However, the GPL forces developers to use these bad solutions.
My choice would be to leave something in the wiki about getting it to work with illegal relicensing of the intel drivers to GPL and stop providing intel drivers in the repository in this case.

it's not an issue any more, the drivers have been fixed up and released.
