Nvidia problem after kernel update

I moved from 2.6.15 to 2.6.16 with ABS and now my nvidia isn't working.

When I run pacman -S nvidia, I see:

INSTALLATION FAILED

=> You have to shutdown X-server to finish installation! You have to rerun pacman -s nvidia

And I am sure that I've shutdown my X, I even removed /tmp/.X0-lock

Can anyone help me  smile

I used to have the same problem, look at the var file it create and U will see what is the prolem
and way to sort it up, when you have installd with ABS, the soft link for the kernel source is broken, so you need to go to where your kernel is installd and replace this link so it will link to /usr/src/linux-2.6.16-ARCH or something

:? I don't understand, I have my kernel sources at /usr/src/linux-2.6.16-ARCH and I have /lib/modules/linux-2.6.16-ARCH but the ABS is /var/abs/testing/kernels/kernel26/pkg/lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH

The logfile talks about /opt/nvidia but I dont have that

I have the same problem. I have just upgraded new kernel with pacman and I cant reinstall the nvidia drivers, what now?

why you don'T use the drivers provided in extra now?
as 2.6.16 was in testing the testing packaeg also did the trick

I also have the exact same problem. Last time there was a kernel upgrade I had this problem and just did a pacman -R nvidia then pacman -S nvidia which worked. This time no such luck.Is there something in the nvidia package in current that needs fixed?

I had the same problem. I simply rebooted and then

pacman -S nvidia

It worked for me  smile

I also have this problem. Just did pacman -Syu which updated kernel26.

Upon rebooting I can no longer startx successfully. Also, reinstalling the nvidia drivers doesn't seem to work.

I rebooted a number of times, making sure that X was not started. Always the same error as Nando reported in the first post.

The servers which we use to download the latest files hadn't updated fully (i.e. they thought build 15 was the latest Nvidia driver released, whereas it is 16). The servers should be up-to-date in a few hours I guess, but until we'll have to do things manually.

nvidia worked fine here, would point out that if you have just installed a new kernel then you need to boot that kernel to install nvidia in it.

my usual way is to to install the kernel boot to run level three

by adding init 3 to the end of my bootloader line

then pacman -S nvidia
then telinit 5 and off you go....

2.6.16-beyond handled it perfectly

It worked perfectly for me when I installed it manually, but the updates in repositories are really vey slow, I stil havent there this nvidia package or the new gnome packages.

Today, April 4, I rean Pacman -Suy. It installed kernel26-2.16.1-5. I rebooted and ran pacman -S nvidia.  It will not install. It used nvidia-1.0.8178-15. So I tried Pacman -R nvidia followed by pacman -U  nvidia-1.0.8178-16 (the ftp one recommended earlier in this thread). That won't work either.

Anyone got any suggestions??
