Map Mouse Button to Backspace only in Specific Program

I have had no luck getting KODI (previously XBMC) to recognize my thumb keys (which are recognized globally as forward/back). So I'm now wondering if its possible to get the 'back' button (mouse button 8) to equal the 'backspace' key only wihin KODI when I am using it?  I am using a Logitech M510 wireless mouse, in case that matters.

I found this thread which details some stuff, but I'm too much of a novice to follow exactly what they are doing.
I can see it has to do with xbindkeys, and using that in a script of some sort. If anyone could get me a rough outline, or a word for word outline , of how I might accomplish this, Id be grateful.
