Sound is gone

Hi,

This is two days old arch linux installation. I am using Dell Inspirion 6000 laptop. Sound worked fine until it suddenly started not working. By not working, I mean that I cannot get sound from any application I use. This behaviour persisted after a restart.

Both xfce audio mixer and pavucontrol thinks that everything is fine, but I am not hearing anything. This is how pavucontrol looks;

I am using alsa and pulseaudio with default settings. (I don't remember modifying any config files.) Here are output of some possibly usefull commands;

Yo Dawg, I heard you likes patches, so I have created a patch for your patch, so you can patch your patches before you patch.

Something on your computer changed. Did you do an update with pacman since sound was last working? What packages were updated?

Also, check the volume levels. wink

Re: Sound is gone

I actually found the problem, pressing mute key on my keyboard mutes Master and PCM channels, but pressing it again only unmutes Master channel but PCM channel remains muted.

I don't really understand how sound channels are supposed to work. But currently both master and PCM channels needs to be unmuted and volume level should be increased in order to get a sound. Is it how sound supposed to work?

Is there a way to fix this problem? I would like to get rid of this PCM channel altogether if it is an option. If not, how can I fix the keyboard shortcut that handles mute/unmute?

How have you set up the mute key?

Re: Sound is gone

I didn't set it up, it just worked out of the box. The setting also don't show up on xfce4-keyboard-settings

Re: Sound is gone

Solved: Install xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin : https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xfce … io-plugin/

It is a panel plugin. Use it instead of audio mixer panel plugin and it will solve the problem.
