gdm setup in Arch

I am able to install and use gdm. However, I would like to change the ugly default screen. When I run gdmsetup it gives me this error: Error while loading user interface element sr_logo from /opt/gnome/share/gdm/gdmsetup.glade. I have tried reinstalling gdm but I still get the same error. Does anyone have a clue what might be wrong here? Obviously, there is a missing file, ie sr_logo which I assume is am image file. It says that my glade is "on crack" :-) Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I get upset when apps do not install properly. I even tried downloading the tarball for gdm, but when I try to configure it, it also screams about missing files. Thanks for anything.

Regards,
Mike

Re: gdm setup in Arch

Thanks a lot. I can now configure gdm. But which file do I edit so that I can have a choice of which windowmanager I want to use?  This would show up in the session chooser of the graphical login. Thanks for anything.

Mike

Re: gdm setup in Arch

I believe you uncomment ( remove the # from in front of the windowmanger) you want to use in your ~/.xinitrc dir.

Re: gdm setup in Arch

Thanks for the reply, but gdm will not read a ~/.xinitrc. That file is used for the startx command. Thanks, anyway.

Re: gdm setup in Arch

Thanks a lot. That is what I have been searching for. One final question. I like to start xscreensaver when X starts. Where do I place the command to start this. I have tried placing the commands in ~/.xsession but it isn't getting read. Thanks for anything and also for replying so promptly to my question. I find myself having to relearn Arch. :-)

Mike

Re: gdm setup in Arch

what window manager  are you using? i use xfce4 and what i do is simply make a folder in ~/ Desktop then in Desktop make another folder Autostart. Enter Autostart so your pwd should be ~/Desktop/Autostart
now make a script

$ vi xscreensaver.sh

now put in

#!/bin/bash
exec xscreensaver

now save it with :wq and make it execuatable

chmod 755 xscreensaver.sh

test it with

./xscreensaver.sh

and xscreensaver should start. now either kill xscreensaver daemon and logout and relogin and it should start up, yay smile

woo i helped someone with another thread smile

Re: gdm setup in Arch

Thanks for the reply. I use openbox3. I can do what you suggested by creating Desktop/Autostart and placing the shell script and it works from the command line, but it doesn't get read when ob3 starts up. Arch is different in this aspect from Gentoo. In Gentoo, you create an entry in /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions and in that entry for your wm, you put whatever you want to start before the wm starts. I haven't yet figured out how to do that in arch. I have tried ~/.xsession but it doesn't work. Your suggestion is great, if I could just get it to work. Keep those suggestions coming. :-) Thanks again.

Re: gdm setup in Arch

Well, I created an ~/.xprofile and placed the items I wanted to startup with my wm and it seems to work. I think there is a problem using gkrellm and openbox3. When I start up gkrellm, I lose the menu in openbox3 and nothing will work. They don't play very nicely together.
