Multiple displays configuration not remembered any more

A while ago I used the Gnome Displays settings to set up my external monitor as the Primary and only display (turning off the built-in one). This worked as expected (reverting to just the built-in when no external monitor is connected), and the configuration was kept after shutdowns.

After some recent updates, this is not the case any more. I have to go in the Gnome Displays settings every time I connect the external monitor after a shutdown.

It has been a while I haven't fiddled with xorg.conf, and I'm not very thrilled by the idea of doing that... But, if anybody has any idea on how to fix this configuration, or on what changed in the recent past, that would be highly appreciated.
