[solved] Segfaults: kde, compiz 8, balloo_file, kactivitymanager

Hi!

After update and reboot, my system is barely stable enough to figure out what's wrong. Changed nothing else since last reboot (when everything was working fine).

Tried both the new kernel (updated today) as well as linux-lts ( and a random / older linux-rt from aur) - all three have the same problem.

KDE starts without window manager and is unusable. in xfce, windows randomly disappear. Trying to start compiz makes things worse in both environments.

I managed to get a few glimpses as the journal and saw nothing that helped me identify the problem so far. Just a lot of "random" KDE errors like this:

kactivitymanagerd[1675]: QWidget: Cannot create a QWidget without QApplication

kactivitymanagerd[1778]: QObject::killTimer: Timers cannot be stopped from another thread

KDE Baloo Filewatch service reached the inotify folder watch limit. File changes may be ignored.

( did not manage to remove or even just deactivate baloo by the way - I've tried before, many times )

I also saw a "No space left on device" scroll by, but according to df all of my "devices" have lots of space left and I couldn't find the error message with grep afterwards.

And then there's lots of core dumps from different / random applications (this is my third attempt posting this).

Any hints on where to look for the problem / what to do?

Intel processor (Haswell or early Broadwell)? If so, microcode up to date?

It doesn't explain most of the errors, but with multilple things segfaulting, I have to ask.

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6

But just for "fun" (because I have no idea how stuff works and I probably have intel chips on my mainboard) I installed intel-ucode, which probably makes no sense whatsoever (and changes nothing).

I think there's something wrong with my journal + error messages... feels like there should be more somewhere, it is very quiet since I have this problem.

Text in tty is barely decipherable (too small).

As soon as I start kde, the plasma-desktop crashes and keyboard stops working. Managed to start fusion icon trough desktop context menu. Compiz crashes after about 10 seconds - don't know why - but during this time, I managed to start kwin which worked for a few more seconds before segfaulting. Killed baloo-file and switched back too compiz. And now, everything seems a lot more stable, but I still get random crashes and no error messages anywhere any more (don't even see the segfault notices any more....)

You said `df` looks good, how about `df -i`?

Re: [solved] Segfaults: kde, compiz 8, balloo_file, kactivitymanager

That looks fine too.

I created a new user account for testing... vanilla KDE and xfce seem to work fine there so far, so there might be a problem with user settings when it comes to those two... oddly. Compiz is broken systemwide.

No (relevant looking) error messages anywhere any more... I'm not sure any more if this is really a package upgrade problem... maybe kde user settings / cache just randomly "self-destructed"...

balloo_file still rouses my suspicion. But then again, I've always hated that thing...

*sigh*

I'll change the topic to include "compiz, balloo" although I'm not sure those are related... guess unless someone turn up with a similar problem, I'll just have to delete the user and reconfigure everything... and then figure out how to get compiz working again...?

edit:
Just noticed that conky isn't working any more. Worked before rebook, now it says:
... even though the configuration file is exactly the same that has been working yesterday.

edit: conky unrelated, but the conky update that broke configs is not in my pacman log... weird...

I don't understand what's going on T_T

After deleting kde configs + cache, the only thing still broken is compiz, so I guess the "official" part of this problem is => solved.
