I've reported this as a bug against mesa here: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/45510
In the meantime, I've been reverting various packages bit by bit, such as mesa, mesa-libgl, mesa-vdpau, lib32-mesa, lib32-mesa-libgl and even linux, and I'm waiting for the next blank-out. I doubt reverting the kernel is going to work since it was upgraded after the 1st blanking and I've not yet bothered to pull the kernel further back.
I've attached part of the journal and an xorg log to the above bug report and would be interested if anyone has any opinion on what might be the cause.
Researching this type of bug is quite difficult as people seem to have addressed it, if at all, in many different ways and I'm not really sure where to start.
