Retrieve data from m.2 ssd

Hi all -

I've had an apparently unresolvable issue with my C720 chromebook and need to retrieve some data from the disk drive.
It's an m.2 ngff ssd. What I am hoping to do is to take it out and somehow transfer the data to another linux machine.

What I'm confused about is what I might need - a card, an adapter or an enclosure etc, or something else? Are there any issues with linux drivers in the host machine I'll be transferring it to?
My other linux machine is just a regular workstation with only regular SATA connectors onto the motherboard. The adapters I've seen (eg. http://www.amazon.com/DT-119-NGFF-adapt … B00FKCSMYY appear to be designed for end use in laptops to replace mechanical HDDs.
Anyone had any experience of doing this and can recommend a good solution?

thanks a lot.

Re: Retrieve data from m.2 ssd

I'd say that adapter should work(1), you just need to plug the power and data cables. You say that you have a workstation so that should be easy. As for the drivers, I suppose you don't need anything besides the drivers for your motherboard's sata controller.

(1) The form factor doesn't matter as long as you can plug the ssd, "convert" it to sata and get the data out.

Re: Retrieve data from m.2 ssd

I'm not having the best of luck with links from the forums lately, so it may be me, but your link goes to an amazon error page.  But I've used one of these for both HDDs and SSDs just fine:
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-SATA … rive+cable

In theory a HDD could draw too much power from a usb port so it should have a separate power supply.  But I've done without with no resulting problems a handful of times.  With an SSD this is not an issue at all.

EDIT: sorry about the noise - I misread and misunderstood.

@Trilby
The OP wants to convert from m.2 to usb not sata to usb wink
Regarding the link, it has and extra ) at the end.
