[SOLVED] Screen resolution issues after latest upgrade, xrandr?

I ran a pacman -Syu last night, and after restarting my screen is rendered off center. My monitor is 1280x800 native resolution, but it seems only a 1024x768 section of the bottom right is visible. The top and left portions of the screen are cut off, and there are black bands to the right and bottom on my monitor.

Output of xrandr:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 61.0*
   800x600 61.0

When I try to do anything with xrandr, I get the same "Failed to get size of gamma for output default" error.

Help?

You might want to state what video hardware you are using and its associated driver as well.

This is (I believe) the relevant bits of lspci -v:

	Memory at fea00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
	Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	I/O ports at efe8 [size=8]
	Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: i915

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c)

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0

and I'm using the vesa driver.

Have you tried using "xf86-video-intel" as the driver?

Seems it's no longer grabbing the EDID from your monitor. You can try adding the proper mode manually with "xrandr --newmode" (man xrandr or google it on how to do this). More interesting though might be to find out what package upgrade caused this. A few xorg packages were upgraded recently. Have you tried downgrading them to see if any of those updates caused it?

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't see where he's using the VESA driver. Try using the intel driver first.

Using the intel driver results in X failing to start (something about no screens found).

Do you have any custom xorg.conf configuration files?  If so, try renaming or moving them out of their proper location.  Also, did you remove or blacklist the VESA driver before attempting to start X with the Intel driver?

After some poking around on the wiki, I figured it out. The package is xf86-video-intel, the driver is just "intel". Boy do I feel silly tongue

Things are working now, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

How did you figure out that the video driver you were using was not xf86-video-intel. I have the same problem.
