Keyboard & controller macro function builder similar to ControllerMate

I migrated to Linux from Mac OS X. One tool I miss dearly is ControllerMate. I haven't seen anything as good, in either Windows or Linux.

What keyboard & controller macro builders are available? At the most basic, I would like to be able to re-map keyboard keys to game keys. For example, making the press of keypad-1 translate to function-1 in a game or application.

Have you tried xmodmap?
