Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

so with systemd 220 a new feature was added to allow rebooting to EFI. Useful in my case as I have "Ultra-Fast" booting enabled. This means that I have to reboot to the EFI from the OS or clearing the UEFI settings(battery or jumper).

Unfortunately I can't get it working. Running "systemctl --firmware-setup reboot" results in two errors depending if ran as root or regular user.

Regular: Cannot indicate to EFI to boot into setup mode: No such file or directory

Root: Cannot indicate to EFI to boot into setup mode: Unknown object '/org/freedesktop/login1'.

Anyone have any success with this option?

Re: Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

That feature likely requires you to use systemds sd-boot manager that is based on gummiboot

Re: Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

Go to your motherboard manual and read the "Fast" and "Ultra-Fast" options. Usually, these are for Windows only and it may require you to reset your CMOS to gain access to your UEFI firmware

Already am using it.

As for the second response, this is exactly what --firmware-setup does. It replicates functionality already in Windows since 8. Except it doesn't work due to some bug or configuration setting.

Re: Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

OK, I think I understand now. Does 'systemctl --firmware-setup reboot' work if (ultra)fastboot is off? I would try it myself, but I played this game this weekend, and I did NOT like it. I did try the command with fastboot off, and it worked for me.

I...actually have no idea. It should(if booted in UEFI mode) but it's also irrelevant since in normal fast mode you can press f2 or del to get into the UEFI setup screen. This is because the keyboard drivers get loaded by UEFI using fast boot but not ultra-fast.

Re: Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

OK, I tried mine with disabled, fast and ultrafast. 'systemctl --firmware-setup reboot' works in all three for me on systemd 221, linux-4.0.7-1-ck kernel. I don't know where to go with this. Sorry.

Re: Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

@Mangix, I have the same problem.

I have two computers, desktop and laptop. On desktop (HP Elite 7500) it works perfectly, I can boot directly in UEFI after issuing the command. On laptop, I get the same error as you do. The good thing is on the laptop, if I keep pressed space key, the sd-boot (old Gummiboot) will put up a menu where automatically has the option to enter UEFI. Don't know why the laptop (Lenovo E540) behaves differently, I set both in the same day so I think there were no differences between setups.

Re: Trying to reboot to EFI is failing

yeah except in my case i can't use the keyboard during the sd-boot screen. I am not sure if there is a way to configure sd-boot to enter UEFI setup by default.

edit: the only thing i can think of is that SecureBoot is in setup mode. Although it's disabled...

Firmware: UEFI 2.31 (American Megatrends 4.654)
   Secure Boot: disabled
   Setup Mode: setup
