I can never seem to get these 2 things to work together, though Skype only uses pulse. It would be appreciated if someone could help me to configure pulseaudio. I do not really want to use pulse, and would prefer to only use only ALSA. How can I configure pulseaudio to be as unobtrusive as possible and, preferably, only bother Skype?

If you don't like pulseaudio, you could try apulse resp. lib32-apulse.
However, I had the impression that sound in skype is worse when I use apulse.
But this is only my personal impression and is certainly also related to the fact that my internet-connection is rather slow.
So with pulseaudio it's not that good either for me.
Edit: You might also want to have a look at Skype#Skype_sound.

While I would use an alternative, I know that pulse will work with Skype and I would prefer to just get help configure it to be as unobtrusive as possible. Usually, when I install it, it just messes up my audio for all applications.

Have you followed this?

Are there actual problems with using pulse? The last times I installed pulse it was a rather painless experience and it just worked.

Yeah really you have to define what your actual problems are, if you absolutely don't want to use pulseaudio apulse is the way to go, if there's something specific to pulseaudio you have to describe what your actual problem is
There's also this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … pe_to_ALSA which probably comes closest to what you want, no idea if it works though

Thanks, this was what I was looking for! Sorry that I neglected to read into everything on the Wiki.
