Thunar - Browse Network doesn't see samba servers listed [SOLVED]

Hi All,

I'm not the most regular user of samba but have tried setting this up a few different ways now.

I've an Arch system using XFCE with Thunar and have installed the requirements for browsing samba shares (gvfs, gfvs-smb etc as per Wiki).

If I browse directly, I can see/modify files in the location... That's great, but what I really want is the be able to dynamically discover network shares.

When I use Thunar and click "Browse Network", the server showed up correctly once and then not again.
I'm trying to figure out service actually discovers this on the network and what could be preventing.

I figure the server either responds to a broadcast/multicast or continually throws out a 'hello' of sort.

I've already checked nmbd, smbd are running on server.
Likewise tried doing so on the client under the thoughts that both client/server need to be a 'server' of sort (like Windows systems).

I've ensure they are in the same workgroup, and they are on the same subnet range also.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

JD.

@Moderators - Perhaps I actually should've posted this is Networking & Server. Please feel free to move it.
Just felt it might be best suited to Newbie Corner at time of posting. smile

Hi jdmac, welcome to the forums. Did you set up avahi [1] on both server and client?  If I were to hazard a guess, you'll need that to advertise the samba shares over the local network.

EDIT: BTW, if you want things moved, you can use the report button and request moving there. Although Newbie Corner if perfectly fine for this question.

Hi Runical,

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried Avahi daemon, but to no real avail.

Interestingly, it did work (as mentioned) briefly without any Avahi daemon enabled.

I'll have another stab at the Avahi to see if it makes a difference again.

Any other suggestions, aside from Avahi, that would be announcing/discovering?

Thanks,

JD

Ok, I'd not added the appropriate .service file to avahi.
Given it announced before, without me adding this, I'm puzzled how.
But yea, server now announcing our on avahi and working.

Thanks Runical.

You probably forgot to enable the service. Starting will not survive a reboot.

Glad to have been of help. smile
