Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

Just installed a brand new arch install, trying to get steam linux client running.

I enabled multilibs repository since I have an x64 system.

Also installed 32-bit version of graphics driver and alsa plugin as instructed in the wiki.

When I try to run steam, it attempts to update and the dialog box says 'Fatal Error: Steam needs to be online to update.  Please confirm your network connection and try again.'

Starting from the console this is the output I get in the terminal window:

[peetipablo@donbot ~]$ steam

Anyone have any ideas what I could do to fix this?

Have you set your hostname correctly? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … e_hostname Also mentioned in the  Beginner's Guide which is what you should follow when installing Arch

Hi, thanks for the response.

I did set up my hostname file when I set up my arch installation.

[peetipablo@donbot ~]$ cat /etc/hostname
donbot
[peetipablo@donbot ~]$

Also, here is my /etc/hosts file if that helps:

# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#

#<ip-address>	<hostname>
127.0.0.1	localhost donbot
::1		localhost donbot
192.168.82.105	localhost donbot

# End of file

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

Is this a consistent error?

Steam tells me it can't connect sometimes and I have a solid 80Mb connection hmm

Yes, I have never been able to run steam since initial installation of arch.  It always errors at the initial updater screen.

I got the same problem and same error output.

Edit: Fresh install too.

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

Are you using Nvidia Proprietary drivers Peetipablo?

I'm using the latest Nvidia proprietary drivers (nvidia) with their 32bit libs. I am also using intel microcode but I don't know if this is relevant.

I was using the open source Radeon drivers.  My gpu is R9 290.  Couldn't figure out a fix :\

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

Ok, this is not a driver problem then. This is my hardware:

Processor: i7 4790K
GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 970
Memory: 16GB RAM
Motherboard: ASUS z97-A

Maybe it is a hidden dependency problem in multilib or a hostname one. Could anyone tell me any tests to run in order to dectect which is the problem?

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

@Peetipablo: I see you're behind a router -- are you getting DNS information from this router? Can Steam update if you use different DNS servers (e.g. google's 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4)

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

Hi WorMzy,

Thanks for the reply.  I gave up on this issue and am just running steam in a windows VM after a couple days attempting to troubleshoot.  Hopefully ChuckDaniels has better luck than I did.

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

BINGO! lib32-acl was missing. I compared my packages with my laptop multilib packages and installed one by one. @Peetipablo try to install this package and run steam. Should I report this missing dependency?

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

This problem seems to have come back. I couldn't connect to steam Store, Profile,... so I did:

steam --reset

Now I'm stucked in the same place being unable to install steam.

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

Ok, I've found a thread in openSUSE forum.  Basically, you have to store media.steampowered.com IP (for example pinging that direction) in your /etc/hosts (or in the user one). This is likely IPS/DNS provider problem as WorMzy said.

Edit:
I've just realized that I had enabled NetworkManager.service and systemd-networkd.service, that was causing also other kind of problems and maybe some related with this thread.

Re: Steam fails to update; 'Steam needs to be online to update'

I ran into this issue as well. I tried to install the steam-native client from AUR, but was missing some 32 bit dependencies. After installing lib32-gconf i was able to connect to steam from multilib. I hope this helps.

Closing this topic as Peetipablo appears to have lost interest in solving their problem.
