Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

Ok. I got my system up and running now. However I don't understand pacman.

1) How can you explain using pacman to an apt-get(ter)?
2) How do I install XFce4 (or other simple X adviced)?
3) Adding my swedish keyboard-setup?*

Regards
Richard

[EDIT]
*During install I configured it correctly with (km??) command but on the installed system it's still the american default. How can I keep it permanent?
[/EDIT]

"man pacman" did it for me.

2) How do I install XFce4 (or other simple X adviced)?

after reading the short "man pacman" you'll know how to search for groups xfce4 is one of them, just install it as explained in the man page

3) Adding my swedish keyboard-setup?*

  no idea, sorry

Richard

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

I think my problem is with the "repositories" list. I don't seem to have one ( I guess I have to configure it manually).

you suppose to have on by default big_smile

pacman -Syu
pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies

You might want to change servers to one that's near you (don't use the nethat one, that one is a bit outdated). Also you might want to add additional repos (community/testing/unstable). See the wiki about that.
Servers you can find in /etc/pacman.conf, servers in /etc/pacman.d/(current,extra...)

[edit]
i think you can configure your keyboard in /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the XKB settings

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

pacman -S links
error: could not open database: extra
have you used --refresh yet?
pacman -S --refresh
[LOT_OF_JIBBERISH]
error: could not open database: extra
have you used --refresh yet?

I realised I don't have any DHCP-client installed and don't know how to fetch it from the cd. I believe I would need that in order to use pacman...

[EDIT]
I haven't touched a single configuration file yet (besides in my home dir).
I'll try changing the repositories as soon as I have connection.
[/EDIT]
[EDIT2]
There's several NoUpgrade and a single HoldPackage statements in pacman.conf
Haven't touched it though

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

so the problem is you don't have a connection?

Well, then you'll need to get yourself a connection wink
Go and edit /etc/rc.conf.

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

I realised I don't have any DHCP-client installed

Isn't that part of the base packages? It's never a good idea to strip things from the base packages group unless you really really need to... I once made ifconfig disappear that way  8)

Your keymap and other stuff can be set in /etc/rc.conf
You should have been told to edit this during installation though...

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

Well it's working now.  I have dhcpcd running in the backround as root. Is that really the best way? Well thanks for the help anyway...

Regards
Richard

[EDIT]
About the servers. Should I remove the ones already there or just add some on top of the list? (I'll try the latter meanwhile). It's downloading incredibly slow from North america > Sweden...
[/EDIT]
[EDIT2]
Ehm..  I guess I can use the swedish ftp/http server used for downloading the iso??

You can shuffle/comment the mirrors to your liking.

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

What I meant was if the first mirror will be used before the second?

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

Also, are you 'manually' running dhcpcd? There's an initscript /etc/rc.d/network that should take care of all your networking stuff once /etc/rc.conf is set up correctly.

And as long as dhcpcd is running (afaik, should be root) it's available for all other users, too.

Re: Tuning my base system? (3 Newbie Questions) [SOLVED]

I just want to say thanks. I got the new repositories with a swedish server to really use my bandwith fully, and it's so damn quick and logical. Thanks for everything everyone!

Richard
