usb ports giving power but don't recognize devices

Hi all,

I'm having some trouble with my usb ports on a lenovo thinkpad x201.

If I plug in a flash drive I am able to mount it. However if I plug in a phone or a usb speaker, it only gives power. No message shows up on dmesg.

When I do lsusb -v I get lots of "Couldn't open device, some information will be missing"

$ uname -a
Linux arch-satellite 4.1.2-2-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jul 15 08:30:32 UTC 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Thanks!

Have you tried:

udevadm monitor

What sort of phone is it?

I find that the "storage device" option must be activated from the phone before it will show up.

Re: usb ports giving power but don't recognize devices

It is an android phone. I just realized the issue with that, I had to unlock the phone before it was recognized.

However my speaker is still not working (it used to some time ago, I'm guessing some upgrade has stopped that).
It is a soundblaster roar. It (the speaker) makes a sound as if acknowledging it was connected and then it makes another sound stating it was disconnected. Nothing shows up under `udevadm monitor`.

Are you sure the speaker is functional?

Does it work (or show up in `dmesg`) in the live environment?

When plugged, does it show in the output of:

cat /proc/asound/cards

Re: usb ports giving power but don't recognize devices

It works as a bluetooth speaker, and it used to work as a usb speaker. However now it's not even showing up in dmesg. I thought it was related to the phone problem too, but that seems to have not been a problem, so perhaps the speaker itself has stopped working.

Nevermind, fixed it, some weird combo of turning it on and off and connecting and reconnecting it somehow fixed it, at least temporarily.

Re: usb ports giving power but don't recognize devices

Actually, this is a deeper issue. When I use the speaker in a port and then detach it I can no longer use that port to use that speaker or my phone (the phone gets power but even after unlocking it it does not connect as a storage device). When plugging either into a port that I haven't used the speaker with yet then both work. All usb ports can be reset, of course, by a computer reboot.

I haven't tried testing if turning the speaker off before detaching it fixes this because I don't have time to keep restarting my machine when I run out of ports (I only have 3).

Is there some other way to `restart' a usb port?
