Using pacman with Dialup

is it possible to get pacman to work with a ppp connection? is there some configuration that needs to be changed for this to work?

i've been trying to figure it out all night and it's just working....

I thinke you meant it is not working  wink
Beiing seriou off cours epacman work over dialup. It is like any network application (mail, web browser etc. etc.)
As far as I understoop you have a working dialup connection.
Now few question:
Are you sure you connectio is working propely?
Once connecte did you done test with other application?
Is is enought do a

ping google.com

and see if it work.
If it does not work try to ping directly the ip address:

ping 216.239.37.99

If it answer probably you have a dns configuration problem.
If the first test work then try to connect to any ftp site with an ftp client.
If it is not working could be you have a firwall/nat problem that depends from your provider (the people you call with the modem).

If your http is working take a look to pacman.conf and change mirror, one of them is by http.

Another think is to change the primary mirror pacman use. Normaly is ftp.archlinux.org but judd has some bandwith problem (to many people downloading and he has to pay for the traffic) so he limited the access to 30 user at time and 20K of bandwith each.
So could be also that you found the server busy.

P.S.
Sorry if I answered in obvious mode in some part, but I do not know wich is you skilll level and anyway this post can be usefull to less experienced user as well.

Re: Using pacman with Dialup

edit: forget it... i'm going to install Knoppix again... this is too much work. i need something that doesn't require this much work.

well.... it looks like Arch isn't using the DNS from the ppp connection. i can't ping any outside address (and 127.0.0.1 doesn't work, but i'm not worried about that right now).

how do i go about setting up the network to use ppp DNS?

Re: Using pacman with Dialup

I'd fix being able to ping localhost first - that sounds like a fairly large misconfiguration of the network subsystem.

Re: Using pacman with Dialup

You edit /etc/resolv.conf.

You probably can't ping localhost because your lo interface isn't started.

Re: Using pacman with Dialup

tried editing /etc/resolv.conf... that didn't help. and yes, i disabled lo, so that's why ping 127.0.0.1 isn't working.
