In my workplace I have two printers a Ricoh Aficio and a HP Color LaserJet 5550 and they are running via a remote CUPS server. However I can browse their cups page via the remote cups web interface.
I downloaded the suggested drivers hplip and openprinting-ppds-pxlmono-ricoh, in cups as connection I use the webaddress http://cupsserver/printername and I select the correct driver.
However, each time I try to print I get filter failed on both printers.
In the /var log file are lines like:
D [05/Mar/2015:17:07:21 +0100] [Job 9] Running command line for gs: gs -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dSAFER -sDEVICE=ps2write -sOUTPUTFILE=%stdout -dLanguageLevel=3 -r600 -dCompressFonts=false -dNoT3CCITT -dNOINTERPOLATE -c 'save pop' -f /var/spool/cups/tmp/foomatic-uP3YzG

D [05/Mar/2015:17:07:21 +0100] [Job 9] PID 30675 (pstops) stopped with status 1!so it seems that ghostscript crashes with a segfault.
I used this printers with another arch machine, I do not actually remember the precise settings. But I guess a gs crash should not happen...
What can I try?

Hi,
the same here. I'm using Xerox machine so it's not printer dependent.
I had this printer working in the past but now it doesn't work with very similar error as you have.

Here is the same situation - filter failed, gs crashes
My printers are cups-pdf and HPLJ1010
ghostscript 9.15-2
cups 2.0.2-1
Offline
Same here with EPSON WF-3520 Series connected via network
Journalctl reveals (for each attempt to print)
kernel: traps: gs[1234] general protection ip:7f6bc70e4150 sp:7fffafe65278 error:0 in libpthread-2.21.so[7f6bc70d2000+18000]
systemd-coredump[1237]: Process 1234 (gs) of user 2 dumped core.
Edit: Funny enough if I print in Landscape (instead of Portrait), it does print, despite the gs crash and filter failed job message.

It is nice to see I am not alone, so we just have to wait a fixing update?

Same problem here: "Filter failed" with Xerox_Phaser_3040. Any solutions?
Offline
Same problem with an Epson 806AW.
Attempting to rebuild ghostscript....
Edit: I rebuilt ghostscript with less optimization
qqbuild nolto cflags -Os yaourt -Sbb ghostscriptgs doesn't crash anymore, but my driver's filter now does:
PID 11242 (/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201306j/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter) stopped with status 1.So I replaced it with epson-inkjet-printer-escpr and used config-system-printer to set it up as a a new printer with a different name.
It is now possible to print, but the escpr driver lacks some of the features the manufacturer's driver provides (mostly stuff I never use).
Obviously, this solution isn't going to work for other printers but I think recompiling ghostscript without much optimization will help.

I'm having problems too. Last week was the last time I printed something, everything was OK.
After a whole bunch of updates, something is not quite right - printing failed with a message of sorts; 'failed to send data to stdin'... I removed my printer (HP PSC 1500) via the web interface and tried to add it again - failure.
Now I get *no drivers* listed by the following command: lpinfo -m -h 127.0.0.1:631
Who's the culprit?
Fundamental Axiom of the Universe (aka Murphy's Law): Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.
First Digital Deduction: Nothing obeys Murphy's Law so well as computers.
Second Digital Deduction: Everything go wrong at least once.
Third Digital Deduction: Things go wrong even when there's absolutely no possibility of anything go wrong.

Now I get *no drivers* listed...Who's the culprit?
Another bug and off topic, but seriously, why these kinds of problems?
After rising from the ashes, a52 5.1 surround output module (collaboration of ffmpeg-full-git, alsa-plugins, and {pulseaudio,pavucontrol}-git)... sometimes isn't available... from boot...? Then it comes back by clearing the cache (bye bye settings) and restarting pulseaudio or logging in and out or, once in a while, no other way than rebooting.
/off topic.
