Hi, after installing arch from cd-rom I issued a "pacman -Sy pacman", "pacman -Rd xfree96", "pacman -Sy xfree86" and tried a "pacman -Syu". The packages for the system upgrade were downloaded but its installation failed and it messed the system so that I can not even use a simple "ls". Everything went to hell.
I am on the verge of giving up...

You missed the problematic coreutils, module-init-tools, iputils upgrades. Install each of those by hand (pacman -S) and then try to -Syu.

So I can make a complete install from cd and update those packs manually?

You could.. but why not do a base install from cd, do those upgrades by hand, and then install everything else as you need it? It's the same amount of downloading.

You are right, there is no advantage in installing a complete system from cd if you want to upgrade afterwards
I have installed Base, upgraded Pacman, installed Links (writting this from it ) and I am going to follow the steps you told me. Thanks
Wish me luck!
P.S.: I like the command line

Well, writing this from KDE's Konqueror. The Base install is the way to go
