I honestly have almost no idea how to set this up. I installed it and can manually pipe info to it but I can't find a great resource that helps me figure out where to put things. I know I write a script with a bunch of stuff that I can probably find premade online but how does that script run? Where should it go? Do I add stuff to PATH or export to path? I'm using bspwm and am only like week 2 or a working Arch install.

I've checked the wiki and github and the directions don't seem clear to me.

To get any text into bar you need to pipe text into it
By the sounds of it, you run the shellscript, and pipe it into "bar". e.g.
~/bin/myscript.sh | bar

What doesn't seem clear. We can't possibly help if you don't tell us where you are stuck? What have you tried so far? What is working? What is not working? What would you like to work differently? Give us something here - we can't read your mind.

I don't understand how I get my script to run automatically. I would guess that you just chmod +x it and throw it into .xinitrc but other users' seem to be doing something with $XDG_CONFIG_HOME so I'm trying to understand how to do it this way.

Putting it in xinitrc would make sense. But if you want to know what these "other users" are doing you'll have to either ask them or give us some references to the descriptions of their setup that you are encountering.
