if i boot arch from an usb stick the modem works fine and is listed in "ip link" as wwp0s19f5u3.
if i boot my fresh arch install it's not there - it's weird since i got it working previously. ifconfig -a doesn't display it either. usb_modeswitch does it's job like it should (device ID is 12d1:1506 and the log file says "driver has bound, device is known). maybe this is caused by reboot cycles or something not happening in the right order?
i will provide any info you might need, just ask. it's a bit cumbersome since i'm on another machine typing this and there's no other way to get a connection apart from the huawei.

ANY input is very much appreciated. soon i'm going to have to leave and i wouldn't want to leave this hanging since it's my nephews' computer. maybe there's a cache i need to clear or something?

Is the necessary module loaded in the fresh install?
Offline
yes i think so. lsmod | grep huawei:
cdc_wdm
cdc_ncm
usbnet
usbcore
usb_modeswitch log:
libusb:error [op_clear_halt] clear_halt failed error -1 errno 71
OK, message successfully sent
this is probably still OK as the device id is set correctly?

What does dmesg say when the device is plugged in?

unplug
reboot
power on the thing
attach it to usb

It seems to be registering as a CD drive... See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=175443

Run this command then plug the stick and post the output:
udevadm monitor
