After installing arch linux I noticed laggy responce with the console. For instance, when I type ls in my home directory it'll sometimes take 2-5 seconds before it'll list the contents. Is this because it's using reiserfs or devfs? I assumed they were better so I used them..
I'm used to mandrake where everything is done for me so I assume I just don't have something setup right.

I have a athlonxp 1700 cpu with a sis735 motherboard. Geforce2mx, 256 megs of pc100 memory. After for the install, i did just a base install so I just get a prompt, that's why it's annoying. When I type top I have 0% all the way across then 100% idle..

hrmmm PC100 mem proberly isnt the best of stuff to use with an Athlon XP, while this proberly isnt the root of the cause.. do you get these same problems with other distros or with windows?

Just this one.. that's why I assumed it had to do with reiserfs or devfs since it was the first time i've used them.

strange this one, have you tryed making a fresh install? or updating the kernel?

is speed a problem for both root and user?
i am thinking that there is a minor error in your configuration files that is slowing the processes down

Normally I just choose base as I want to learn how to configure everything myself. At first I was thinking it was a power management thing since it seems to happen after I have left the system for a little bit, but when I recompiled the kernel I disabled power management. This didn't fix anything. I have not checked whether it's specific to root or user, i'm normally in root since I've been trying to get everything working. If this helps.. when I type top it says my cpu is 0% for everything and 100% idle.

indeed an odd problem i don't think it is a reiserfs or devfs problem necessarily. have you tried upgrading via pacman -Syu to see if any upgrade fix the issue?

The hard disk is not churning away? Initial installs need to make databases for man pages, slocate or locate might run once a day and fill the database for whereis/find/which or some such commands, etc. These databases might be large and take time to create if you are installing lotsa goodies. Hard disks I/O might be set incorrectly (is hdparm even provided in Arch? I think so....). And once upon a time, I used Mesa for a 3d card, that slowed some things down.
