Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

Hi
sorry folks last alsa patch introduced a weird upstream bug that could cause weird hangs or sound issues.
oss emulation is broken in 2.6.16.1-5/-6
please update to 2.6.16.1-7 that includes a fix for that.
greetings

This seems to fix the issue for me - thanks a lot tpowa!

Re: Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

hmm, pretty strange the difference between the packages are only an additional alsa fix and a removed acpi patch that caused more trouble then it was helpful,
so it should work.

EDIT:
from which kernel version are you updating?

Re: Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

I have no modules. nothing is working. tried to reinstall kernel, same thing. gives me the generic Xorg login manager. can't load kde, gnome, etc. have to manually load the network modules.

do you have MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes" in rc.conf?
from which kernel have you updated?

Re: Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

it was set to no, switched to yes and still the same. even the beyond kernel is doing the same. all was working fine until I did the upgrade. will check bios for and screw up.

no BLACKLIST

Re: Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

oh yeah, one thing I did do was enable samba at boot up time. I used the Gnome control centre.<Canadian spelling....
how do I stop it from booting? It's not in the rc.conf. I'm beginning too think that had something to do with my issue.

hmm would you try, to just put a # in front of MODULES=
and let the MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes" manage your modules.

Re: Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

After a lot of tinkering I finally got sound to output, but it is garbled.
Seems I had to set sound control to full duplex in >kcontrol>sound system.
Never had to do that before (I've rebuilt arch a number of times).
Also set custom sampling to 44100 and quality to 16 bits.  That changed nothing.  Still a dirty sound.

Re: Broken alsa oss emulation in kernel 2.6.16.1-5/-6

Well kernel26 2.6.16.1-8 works fine for me but kernel26 2.6.16.4-1 gives me sound glitches/issues on www streams...
