Cinnamon launcher does not update on application install. For example, when I do:
pacman -S chromiumThen chromium installs but it does not appear in the cinnamon launcher (search does not work as well). It only appears after I logout and log in again.

This happens to me sometimes but only when Firefox updates, what I do is press "Alt + F2" and type "restart". This will restart cinnamon without closing any of your windows that you had, NOTE that typing reboot will reboot your system like when you type in the command line so dont confuse the two.

I hope this thread is not too old for me to recover it. I'm new to cinnamon and I have this very same problem. Is there a solution that does not involve restarting the whole thing yet?
Thanks!

For what it's worth, I sometimes have this with the Xfce menu so this isn't Cinnamon specific. It only seems to happen for some applications - for instance, try installing virtualbox or if you already have it, uninstall it and then install it again. It won't appear in the menu until the next login. I don't really know what causes this but my guess is that perhaps some applications' .desktop files might be oddly structured causing them to not get recognised on first pass. Just a guess.

I mostly see this on firefox updates: the icon in the panel and the launcher menu disappear after install. But restarting cinnamon fixes it. i guess cinnamon does not instantly recognize new .desktop files sometimes.
What is the problem with restarting cinnamon as altiris said?
I put at button on it. Yes. I wish to press it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I do. (Gune | Titan A.E.)

It's no problem, but seems like it's indicating some other probable underlying problem, doesn't it? I just switched from kde to cinnamon and I never ever had this issue before. Seemed odd and perhaps someone knew why this happens.

I've noticed this as well. It doesn't occur on every program, but it does on firefox updates and other things.

Go look at the way the FireFox desktop file is structured and then look at one that works. It appears to be a desktop file issue. Restarting cinnamon etc. restores it so I have not become interested enough to attempting to fix it as it will be promptly overwritten on the next update.

After updating launchers for firefox, openoffice, and I don't konw what else disappear in Cinnamon. It is super annoying because I reboot hardly ever, I don't know how to restart cinnamon and I don't like to have to do that, so slowly my launchers disappear over time. I could just as well stop using the menu at all.

Cinnamon has done this with me since day one on Arch Linux. Would be great if it was fixed but I have just lived with it for now. I assume when in Linux Mint applications are updated 'apt' will send a trigger to make cinnamon sort itself out.
I guess if we can figure out this trigger, we can find out how to manually give Cinnamon a kick, without restarting the whole thing.
