(Solved) Can't boot arch linux with EXP GDC beast laptop dock

My sony vaio laptop keeps hanging trying to boot arch linux (or any linux) whilst using an external amd graphics card with this dock = http://www.banggood.com/EXP-GDC-Laptop- … 34367.html

I think this may be a bug with my bios because i am unable to use both gpu's at the same time. If i boot with the dock disconnected and add the egpu later it appears to have no resources like memory for example (this happened when i last had arch linux and happens in windows.)

This is also happens the other way around in windows. I am able to boot win7 with the egpu attached, but the onboard nvidia one appears to have no resources and gets a code 43 in device manager.

I havent used arch linux with this machine for a while (since shortly after i got this dock) and its not currently installed. However the arch linux live usb i've created today is experiencing the same behaviour. It's happy to boot when i haven't got the egpu attached but simply crashes when i try with it.

I'm completely stumped on this one. I guess that the kernel is hanging trying to bring on the onboard nvidia gpu when its got no resources/crashed. Is there anyway to tell the linux kernel to ignore the onboard nvidia gpu completely?

There is no visible kernel panic on screen, the computer simply hangs. This isn't arch linux specific, this happens with all linux based os's i've tried and freebsd too.

Booting with irqfixup works long enough for me to reach the arch linux terminal before locking up.

Booting with acpi=off works but stops the laptops own keyboard from working. i can live with that and will use a USB keyboard.

Which kernel are you using?  Have you considered trying the lts kernel?

Not using any linux system at the minute. Been stuck on windows since i bought this dock a few months ago. I'm waiting until i am paid to get a usb keyboard and see how far i can get with acpi=off. A live usb arch system appeared to boot fine but i couldn't type anything.

Great. Please note that the forum is not the best place to document this sort of thing, if there is a wiki page for this particular model of laptop, you may want to consider adding this information there.

I'm going to go ahead and close this topic now.
