recently getting crashes and instability

I've been happily using Arch Linux on this laptop for about two and a half years now. Just 2 or 3 days ago I started experiencing full system lockups. mouse/keyboard do not work and I have to hold the power button down for 5 seconds to shutdown and restart the computer. I upgrade with pacman -Syu daily. I looked at the recent pacman logs but didn't see anything that stood out. I'm not sure how to check the log files to see what is causing the lockups. I used journalctl --since=today but there is a ton of stuff in there and I'm not entirely sure what to be looking for.

Re: recently getting crashes and instability

Can you SSH in when it is locked up? Does REISUB work? Determine if it is just X freezing or something more significant...

Some details about you setup would help: kernel, video card and driver, etc...

Re: recently getting crashes and instability

Hello jasonwryan,

thanks for responding. It locked up again today sometime between 2 and 5 pm. there is nothing in journalctl during that time except cron.hourly being run then the reboot line when i hard reset the system. I was unable to ssh into it while the laptop was crashed. unfortunately this model of Asus laptop does not have a dedicated sysreq button. I cannot get REISUB to work at all. I even tried using a wireless usb logitech keyboard but it doesn't have the sysreq button at all either! As I mentioned earlier I've been using arch on this laptop for over 2 years now without any problems. the laptop remains stationary on the table. I don't lug it around and haven't dropped it. It is however about 5 years old now but I suspect it's a software issue.

8 Gigs of ram
240G Intel 335 Series SSD
Intel (i915 driver) & nvidia GPUs (Optimus)
Linux 4.1.5-1 x86_64

Lockups happen both in Wayland as well as X

Re: recently getting crashes and instability

Try booting with another kernel (-lts, perhaps) and see if the issue persists...

Another thing to monitor is your temps for both cpu and gpu.  See if that has any correlation to your lockup.  Does the lockup happen in console without going into x or wayland?  From restart, how long until your lockups?

Re: recently getting crashes and instability

It's not a temperature issue. I had a temp monitor both in i3 and in Gnome. the frequency of the crashes is pretty random. From my opening post it was almost a full day before it crashed again. but then from a cold boot it crashed again within 5 minutes.

I think I may have forgotten to mention I was using Gnome. that's how I know it crashed both it X and wayland. I'm using i3 right now to rule out gnome. if it crashes again I will try a different kernel.

I tried downgrading from linux  4.1.5-1 to 4.1.4-1 as I still had it in the cache but got conflicting files:
