I recently moved from Windows to Arch (kernel 4.1.5-1-ARCH), and I'm trying to get a music making environment running. Over the last few days I have been troubleshooting my usb sound device (M-Audio Fast Track Ultra) with help on freenode #ardour and #alsa. This device plays and records (using aplay, arecord, etc.), but it will not do both simultaneously.
Running speaker-test, arecord, and dmesg on separate terminals and simultaneously, I get this output: http://pastebin.com/6GVhHqRR
Of note are the two lines from dmesg that come up when running arecord while speaker-test is running:
[37041.167775] usb 2-2: Unable to change format on ep #81: already in use
[37196.805364] usb 2-2: Unable to change format on ep #81: already in use
It was pointed out to me at #alsa that a change was made to usb audio in kernel 3.5 that could be the source of the problem with this usb audio device. That change can be viewed here: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … 577e68cde7 If you search that page, you will see the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra explicity mentioned in a comment to do with the change.
When running distros with older kernels than 3.5, this device plays and records simultaneously. I have tested it in the most recent versions of AVLinux and KXStudio as well as in Debian Wheezy 7.8.0.
More info on this device, gathered by running alsa information script, was uploaded to alsa here: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=f1436 … faceeb51f7
If anyone can help with getting this device working as it should, that would be great. I don't have much experience with linux, but I'm willing to try whatever needs to be done to get this device working.

Should I be reporting this as a bug?
