in CUPS:idle - file not found

Sorry if this has already been asked before. I searched but wasn't able to find any solution to my particular problem.

I've been trying to get cups to print over the network for a long time, but I felt more determined to try again today. I have an HP XP_600 hooked up to a Debian installation with cups. I've successfully been able to print from the Debian install but not from my arch install that is connected to the network via wifi.
After installing cups I went to localhost:631 then to "Administration" and "add printer". I was successful in getting everything set up and selecting a .ppd file (which I downloaded from the EPSON website). However, when I try to print I receive a "printing stopped" message.

In addition under "Printers" I see the following message in the "status" column:

Idle - "File "/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201208w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter" not available: No such file or directory"

I checked, and sure enough there isn't even a /epson-inkjet-printer-201208w/ folder in /opt/. From what I can tell everything else looks good.

I did read over the article on Cups. I also placed the .ppd.gz file inside of /etc/usr/share/cups/model. However even after restarting the service and modifying the printer in the cups web interface I still see the same error.

Have you considered using the epson-inkjet-printer-201208w package in the AUR instead of downloading and installing it yourself?

I did take a look at that package, and it appears to be the same one as was provided by Epson. I also tried looking at epson-inkjet-printer-escpr. I'm still trying to install it though, and I keep getting the following error after running ./bootstrap && ./configure:

error: required file './compile' not found
error: required file './missing' not found
error: required file './depcomp' not found

It would seem that there's a problem with automake; I can't figure out exactly what though.

Just for interest, I was wondering what you actually downloaded from the Epson site as this might have confused matters?
I've just taken a look and found...

and entered XP-600 in the search field and Linux as the O/S.

At the next screen, I am then presented with the choice of five download options.

If for instance you downloaded the first option "XP-600 Series, Printer Driver, Linux, latest, ESC/P Driver (full feature), All language, 09-18-2012" then you have the option of rpm or deb packaged files; if I extract the epson-inkjet-printer-201208w_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb file, then it wants to extract files to the "/opt" directory, including "/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201208w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter" which is the cause of your error message above.

Did you actually install the epson-inkjet-printer-201208w AUR package though? I would have thought that during the installation phase of the package, the relevant files would be moved into the correct places for the CUPS system to pick them up...

Sorry about taking so long. I've been distracted by other things. I was able to get the filter installed, and on the cups web manager I've been able to set everything up. However, whenever I try printing a page, the job stops and the web manager lists the printer status as Idle- "filter failed".

Did you install the epson-inkjet-printer-201208w AUR package? You seem to still be missing the /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201208w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter file it should have installed.

That's the odd thing about the error, the file epson_inkjet_printer_filter is in /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201208w/cups/lib/filter/. I also checked with ls -l and it also has execute privileges. After briefly checking online it sounds like this is a common problem with Epson printers.

Hmm. Maybe try installing ld-lsb from the AUR?
