KVM and GPU passthrough - Suitable motherboard

I'm trying to do GPU passthrough but had issue due to the layout of motherboard I was using.

Many devices were part of the same iommu group meaning ill have to detach other devices such as NIC, USB devices and other devices attached to PCI slots in order to pass it through to the guest machine.

I'm looking to buy another motherboard which doesn't have this same problem i.e. the PCI-E endpoint should be in it's own IOMMU group and separated from the other host devices.

I have two graphics card on this system, one for host and the other for guest. I don't think I'll be doing too much on this system, so a lower-end motherboard will do. The motherboard is for an i5-4460 (1150).

Thank you in advance.

Re: KVM and GPU passthrough - Suitable motherboard

You might want to do more homework and read up on Citrix gpu pass-through as a starting point. You are entering bleeding edge software development, chipset, bios, and gpu are all critical to a working setup.

I would say having it done properly and working are not in the same category as cheap. You probably want to visit the Citrix forums as well as other forums. I would say getting it working on Arch would be something that is not for the timid. Doing a quick search gives results that are a few years old if you have Arch linux in search terms.

Have you tried looking at nbhs's mega thread on KVM VFIO?

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768

There's also a Google Sheet mentioning the list of hardware used by members who successfully done that.
