no master volume control for HDMI audio

im using alsa and pulseaudio with the pulseaudio-alsa file to set up alsa to run through pulse, i get audio but i have to go through the pavucontrol settings just to adjust volume, nothing with any master volume settings works.. trying debian a bit i was able to get it working just fine with pnmixer 0.6.1  on the "default" channel setting, but on arch, nothing.. all drivers are properly installed

any ideas? ive tried ust about every asoundrc config i could think of

How are you trying to adjust the volume?  Are you depending on on of the big desktop environments? (KDE, Gnome, Xfce4)  Something lighter (i3wm, dwm, Openbox)?  Or are you not running in a GUI environment and trying to do this from the console?
