[Solved] Installed gegl-git from AUR, now pacman -Syu fails

A few days ago, I installed gimp-git from the AUR. This required installling gegl-git. I installed both packages using "makepkg -sri", as prescribed in the wiki for AUR. Everything was working as needed.

Today, when running pacman -Syu, no packages were installed because many gegl-related files already exist on the filesystem. The only messages about this in the pacman log are:

Reading the wiki on pacman, it seems that this may be a situation to run "pacman -Syu --force". Is this a proper action in this case?

No. Never force a full update.

If you still have problems, re-run the update and post the actual error messages you get.

Could you run the update command again and give us the exact direct output of pacman? It's easier to understand, what files exactly conflict with what.

You can do some research on your own. Use pkgfile on one of the conflicting files to see, what other package is in conflict. The problem is probably trivial. When something like this happens, I uninstall the respective AUR package, update the system and build and install the package again.

Thanks. I guess I was under a mistaken impression that pacman and correctly installed AUR packages coordinated with each other. @awebb's suggestion to uninstall the gegl-git package, upgrade with pacman, and reinstall gegl-git (if necessary) sounds reasonable.

PS - I ran one of the pacman -Qo commands. As expected, the file is owned by the gegl-git package.

gegl-git should provide and conflict with gegl. It doesn't, which is what's causing your problem.

This depends on how correctly written the AUR packages are. It appears that this one should conflict with the regular gegl package and you should not have both installed at the same time.

Pacman does indeed manage AUR packages built and installed with makepkg, but sometimes things go wrong.

I went through a couple of files with pkgfile. It looks like they belong to a package called gegl. Now you should check those files with pacman -Qo (o like owner). I suspect something either pulled in gegl from the repos or the provides/replaces/conflicts array in the gegl-git PKGBUILD is insufficient.

Judging from your output, pacman tries to update gegl, but wants to overwrite files owned by (probably) gegl-git. I'd try my suggestion and if it fails again, ask the maintainer of the AUR package for insights. Maybe it's a bug in the PKGBUILD.

Ok, I removed gegl-git. To do so, I had to also remove gimp-git. pacman -SYU ran, successfully.

Now, I have to decide what to try to do about the GIMP. I need the git version, because it supports 16-bit colorspace.
