Multimedia keys only working when combined with other keys

When I run

xbindkeys -k

and press the "Raise Volume Button" on my keyboard nothing happens. However if I press e.g. Control + "Raise Volume Button" it successfully registers

Control + XF86AudioRaiseVolume

.

I'd like the multimedia keys to be registered even when pressed without any other key in combination. How can this be done? (Currently I need to press the "fn" key for accessing F1-F12 which is fine).
