Re: buying a tv tuner for arch

i have an ati tv wonder ve and it seems to be supported by the kernel. I use the bttv module. I have never actually watched tv on the system though ;-p I can't seem to compile mythtv on amd64 until the nvidia drivers work. So when that day comes mythtv will be the first thing i compile.

Re: buying a tv tuner for arch

I would highly recommend you check out the knoppmyth website.  The forum has a section devoted just to what hardware works well in linux and more specifically in MythTV.

I'm not familiar with the Plextor tuners, but pretty much anyone will tell you make sure you get a hardware encoding card.  The inexpensive tuners will require the CPU to encode the video, while the better tuners will encode the video themselves.  Take a look at the Hauppauge PVR-150.  It's reasonably priced, has great linux support and does hardware encoding.  That's extremely important if you plan to have multiple tuners in a dedicated HTPC.

Re: buying a tv tuner for arch

After reading those articles it looks like the plextor is a nice unit.  MPEG4 is very nice for space savings.  The only warning I have is that if you do plan to burn your recordings to DVD, it must be MPEG2 if you want to watch it on a standard DVD player.  You can transcode MP4 to MP2, but at the cost of time and quality.
