Please advise: kernel dependencies

I am currently on kernel 4.1.6-1. Several packages want to upgrade together with kernel 4.2.1-1:

zfs-git
spl-git
virtualbox-host-modules

One package doesn't want 4.2.1-1, catalyst-test (requires linux < 4.2).

I can continue the upgrade using the "--ignore linux" (or IgnorePkg in conf) and I can see the packages that want to upgrade, but I notice these (I cancelled at the 'Proceed with installation question):

core/linux-firmware
core/linux-headers
demz-repo-core/spl-utils-git
demz-repo-core/zfs-utils-git

I think I could include the 4 above in the --ignore list and wait for catalyst or catalyst-test to include support for 4.2 so I can at least update the other packages for the time being.

But since I've never run into a situation like this I would like to ask for advise. What is the best way to deal with this?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Please advise: kernel dependencies

You could switch to linux-lts, at least until catalyst catches up. See also the comments on the AUR page for catalyst-test (I assume you meant that one, since you didn't say where you got it).

I don't know if [demz-repo-core] works with -lts, though.

Re: Please advise: kernel dependencies

Those 4 spl/zfs packages only work with the non-LTS kernel. If you switch to the LTS kernel, you'll have to also switch to using the LTS versions of the spl/zfs packages

Re: Please advise: kernel dependencies

So it would probably be wisest to hold back those packages for now so I can upgrade the rest, and and upgrade the ones above when catalyst has => 4.2 support?

Re: Please advise: kernel dependencies

Right, so I decided to switch to the LTS kernel version, along with ZFS, SPL and Virtualbox-host-modules-lts.

Everything seems to be happy.

Thanks!

Re: Please advise: kernel dependencies

Please explain something to me (or point me to an online resource), I've been unable to find how this works ...

I thought LTS versions should not update frequently and stick to a stable version.

However, linux-lts just updated to 4.1.9. Will it update to 4.2.x too later on?

How exactly does this work LTS versions?

Thanks again!

Re: Please advise: kernel dependencies

Nobody ever said the LTS kernel wouldn't update as frequently. It just doesn't get new features. As a matter of fact, 4.1.10 was just released a few hours ago, so there will be another update shortly.

No, 4.2 will not be an LTS kernel.
